Hillary Clinton is speaking out against President Donald Trump’s flashy display of military might for the Fourth of July, adding her voice to widespread criticisms of the event.
“We need a strong national defense, but a president shouldn’t need it next to him in a parade to show his patriotism,” she wrote Thursday in a tweet.

Trump has been accused of hijacking this year’s festivities in Washington, D.C., where he plans to showcase tanks and fighter jets for his “Salute to America” at the Lincoln Memorial.

A U.S. Army spokesperson told viewers of local CBS affiliate WUSA-TV not to panic as tanks began moving into the streets earlier this week.

The spectacle has also prompted the closure of the city’s airspace for the first time in four years, affecting almost 100 scheduled flights, according to CNN.

The Pentagon appears to be attempting to avoid bad press related to the event. It reportedly distributed instruction cards to troops, reminding them to be careful when speaking to reporters and coaching them to express pride in their jobs and their tanks.

She doesn’t take airplanes, she doesn’t eat meat and she’s persuaded her parents, celebrities in Sweden, to do the same. Now she wants politicians, the media and the public to wake up and see climate change as the world’s gravest crisis.

Her meteoric rise to international stardom reached full blossom in the past two weeks when she met Pope Francis, was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize, delivered a stark warning to the European Parliament and was welcomed in the House of Commons in London, with some parliamentarians breaking House rules by applauding to show their admiration for her.

In eight months, Thunberg has become an inspiration for a wave of protests and school strikes over inaction by politicians, and modern civilization generally, to take the drastic steps needed to keep the planet from plunging off the cliff.

Her call for urgent action comes as Europe heads toward another summer of dread. In recent years Europe’s summers have been marked by wildfires, drought, heat waves and refugees fleeing climate-stricken parts of Africa and Asia.

Survivors of a Colorado school shooting walked out of a vigil for their slain classmate Wednesday night in protest of politicians and other groups using it as a platform for gun control, a local report said.

The students from STEM High School, where two gunmen killed a student and wounded eight others Tuesday, began yelling from the stands that they “wanted to be heard” after two politicians and pro-gun control advocates addressed the crowd, according to the local NBC affiliate, KUSA.

They then stormed out of the vigil after Democratic Sen. Michael Bennet and Democratic Congressman Jason Crow addressed the crowd, the Denver Post reported.

The kids chanted “Mental health” and hurled expletives at the media, according to the report.
The students returned, and some of them took the microphone, saying their grief was being used for political purposes.
