Although Maine led the way in implementing work requirements for able-bodied adults without dependents who wish to receive food stamps, a lot of other states did not catch on until 2016-2017.
Georgia made headlines when thousands dropped off the state’s food stamp rolls after the state gradually rolled out food stamp work requirements starting in 2016. Other states such as Alabama soon followed, and more states are starting to find ways to decrease food stamp enrollment and increase employment.
At the federal level, lawmakers are working on legislation to take food stamp work requirements nationwide and reinstate time limits on how long recipients can receive benefits.

If Trump, and Congress succeed in passing tax reform, the economy will get even better.

I look for congress to fuck that up as well.
-
Sane liberals (I already know the witty retort you're thinking of, no need to post it) recognize that welfare reform is an integral part of cleaning up our finances. Like most of you, I don't appreciate perpetually funding the lifestyles of the able-bodied.

Oh, I'm sure they will try, but you've go to think that if they don't pass something decent there will be hell to pay come election time. Maybe.

There is also the issue of where do you draw the line and serve only those truly needy. There are always going to be people trying to scam the system to get something for nothing.
Democrats draw a very loose line with the idea that it is better to let some people cheat than to jeopardize those that are in need. Republicans draw a a tighter line.
I say tighten the requirements and enhance the penalty to those who cheat.

As a liberal, I don't mind helping (via my tax dollars) those who fall on desperate times. But the bigger issue, in my opinion, is not so much where that line is drawn, but where that line ends. Somehow we have people who are fully capable of working instead LIVING on government assistance. For the able-bodied, I don't mind helping keep you out of destitution TEMPORARILY, but if I find you sitting on your capable ass living on my tax dollars, imma be pissed.

McConnell and Ryan (as well as the other establishment types) are playing a long game here. They are convinced if they drag their feet and do nothing, Trump will be blamed and they can get him out of office.
Again, politicians aren't paying attention to the voters, just like 2016. If they continue I believe they will be primaried out in 2018.

I am in favor of firing congress, also.

Heh, that was pretty good.

Why with tax dollars, passing through the very inefficient government machine? And why stop at just your tax dollars? Aren't those in desperate times deserving of more of your money than what you are forced to give through the very inefficient government machine?
Edit: I do agree with everything else you said.

Wanna help people, give 10% to the government and 30% to the church.

The problem with all of you - conservatives and liberals - not wanting able bodied people to live on the dole is being able bodied does not necessarily mean a job is available. Bring manufacturing back to the inner cities and to rural small towns. Get rid of regulations on small businesses. Get rid of regulations on big businesses. Get rid of taxes on all businesses. Stop incarcerating people for non violent offenses.

...or just stop punishing hard work and rewarding parasitism.

Actually it's not a problem at all if I wish not to have able-bodied folks living off my tax dollars, even if there are few jobs in their area. And I think you'll agree we have a problem with folks living off welfare even when there are jobs available. Certainly there are strides we could make toward fixing the job issue, even going so far as to require those who are able-bodied and accepting welfare and who truly are unable to find a job in their area to work community service or volunteer or take vocational training.
-
I think one of the major steps we can take is to require able bodied people on welfare to enter apprenticeship positions and train for new careers. There is a huge shortage of skilled tradesmen.
However they will not do that today because competition from foreign workers depresses salaries so far that the jobs aren't worth as much as welfare. The competition is cut throat, at least according to the tradesmen that I employ - they report that they are getting underbid left and right to people who can barely speak English and who have all the hallmarks of paying under the table. So, welfare recipients are invested in meeting the government's criteria for being non-able bodied rather than enter a brutally competitive job market for less money.

Yep, good point!
Bring manufacturing back to the inner cities and to rural small towns.
In an ideal world, that would be a good solution. Not so easy in the real world.
Get rid of regulations on small businesses. Get rid of regulations on big businesses. Get rid of taxes on all businesses.
Hmmm... simplifying regulation, particularly on small business would be a good thing, actually one of the items I'm in agreement with the President, has made some measurable progress on that. Simplify the tax code - big issue there for me. It is a nightmare and would help both jobs and the economy. Can't say eliminating taxes on all business is a good idea however.
Stop incarcerating people for non violent offenses.
Excellent idea!!!

Absolutely I agree some stay on welfare even when there are jobs. Some are true lazy parasites, others would love to work if they could find it and many use welfare for a short time to get past a hardship. Ideally churches and charity should cover the truly needy which is actually how it used to work when we weren't a welfare state. Bottom line is I don't want my money that I earned going to someone I don't approve of. Why should the government pick who deserves MY money. My tax dollars are the hours and days of my life. If I give that to another it should be to only someone I choose.

Welfare buys votes, very simple.
-
Welfare was Lyndon Johnson's strategy for hijacking the minority vote.
He even claimed it would sew up the black vote (he used the "N" word) for the next two hundred years.
Liberals conveniently forget the facts and blame racism on republicans because lying is so much easier than dealing with fact and truth.
When Gary claims Obama did such a good job "selling" obamacare, he did it with his tongue forcefully pressed against the corner of his cheek because lying IS the democrat party answer to everything.

Oh, things like auto theft, burglary, identity theft...ponzi schemes and scams...

You're right I should have said victimless crimes.

I hear there will be a great need for robot oilers. Until the robots start oiling each other.

Obama was a very charismatic person to some. However the fact that not one Republican voted for Obamacare tells me he really wasn't that good of a salesman. He just had enough of a Dem majority to ram it through. G*d know what he had on Justice Roberts for that man to turn traitor, and rule the way he did. Yes, Obama did lie about Obamacare, and keeping your doctor, and health plan. He blatantly lied, and that is all I need to know about him. Yes, politicians lie, but typically not like that.

In all due fairness, the list is pretty long and quite bi-partisan... ;)

Yes it is, but I wonder how many lied under oath because of it. :)
