I never really thought of mercenaries as bureaucrats. Seems like different skill set. Then again, what do you expect after a couple decades of outsourcing war?

You should read the article. It's not about military contractors or our out sourced wars. It's about all the various law enforcement agencies within the country. Basically there are more cops outfitted like Marines than there are Marines.
We're in an arms race. The more the civilians buy better weapons, the more the government buys better weapons. This in turn is followed by civilians buying even more weapons. Basically, we don't trust our government and the government doesn't trust us. More specifically, the government works to maintain the upper hand, but since the government is made up of citizens, the bureaucrats may be shocked one day when their soldiers refuse to follow their orders.

On the other hand, citizens may be surprised when they do follow the orders. Cops already look upon citizens as "them."

Indeed. It is an unknown. I suppose it would depend on the circumstances.

I don't think that's true. I'm sure there are places where that's the case, but I'd bet the majority of police officers are just doing their jobs. Don't forget that police often times have more bad interactions with people than good ones. A lot of police are gun enthusiasts as well and have a strong respect for the Second Amendment. Like I said, I'm sure there are places where this isn't the case but I think it's small.

Maybe out in the sticks, but any metro area if you're not a cop they treat you like the enemy.

And from their perspective, the odds are in favor that you are the enemy. Cops mostly just deal with people that are fucking up. The majority of these people are bad people.

We have layers upon layers of law enforcement. It is ridiculous. Fed, State, County, Local. All armed to the teeth with SWAT teams, MRAPS, automatic weapons, etc. They are all looking for REVENUE. That's why you get pulled over for a light out, or for speeding. It is not about safety, it is all about revenue generation for government now. Grow budgets, grow personnel, grow salaries. And, they get away with it.
In addition, more, and more non law enforcement agencies have SWAT teams, and police forces which are very militarized now. EPA, NOAA, IRS, etc, all have military style police forces. Why can't they use the dedicated law enforcement agencies to enforce the law?

I would suggest that not all LEOs are in it for the revenue. I believe there are a significant number of LEOs (and LEO-wannabes) that don't like ticket quotes and the like. The problem is caused by the bureaucrats.
