Just like with drunk driving, the only viable way to prevent gun crimes is to completely eliminate guns.
It worked so well with drunk driving, didn't it?
Tens of millions of people drink, a small percentage of those drive while drunk, and a percentage of those drunk drivers kill themselves and/or others.
Tens of millions of people own and shoot guns, a tiny tiny tiny tiny tiny tiny tiny tiny percentage of those injure or kill someone (a higher percentage of people drive drunk)
People can distill/brew their own alcoholic drinks
People can build their own firearms (it's not hard at all, and even easier now with 3D printers)
Yep, take all the guns away. It worked so well with booze.

Just imagine for a moment what this country would be like right now if we had total gun control and the citizens weren't armed. There would be "President for Life Obama" to begin with.......

Here's the thing. Drunk Driving laws have been an utter failure. I mean, no reasonable prosecutor can bring charges if the drunk driver was "extremely careless" when he mowed down those pedestrians.

There are somewhere between 275 and 350 million guns in the United States. How could you eliminate all of them? Given that you can get around that pesky 2nd Amendment thing?

First, you would require people to register their guns. You probably wouldn't get much compliance, but you would get some of the honest people.
Then after most of those that are going to registered have done so, you begin the confiscation (as prescribed by a newly revised 2A).
You offer a payment of some amount, for a limited time (say 1 year) based on the type of gun. Again, some of the honest people will comply.
Those honest people that registered, but didn't turn them in will be first on the confiscation list. Their guns will be seized, along with a rather hefty fine (used to pay off the buyback program).
The next phase would be the arrest and asset seizure of anyone found with any sort of gun.
After a period of time with the asset seizures being publicized, you offer a new, temporary amnesty to anyone that turns in their remaining guns.
At the end of that period, you go back to arrest and asset seizure.
Then once the whole country is disarmed, you can begin dismantling other laws and amendments. First would probably to eliminate elections. I could write a whole book on how things would progress after this point.
Heil Hillary.

Isn't going to happen. For better or worse, firearms are an integral component of American culture. We can't even get rid of assault weapons, which are pretty useless for ought but massacre.

define "assault weapon"

Really? Let's take a look at the number of so called "assault weapons" that are owned by the population vs. the number of "massacres" that have happened. I bet you'll find that the number of people going around shooting up schools, movie theaters or night clubs is a fraction of a percent when compared to the amount that are owned.

define "assault weapon"
A mythical weapon that the American public does not own.
But I'm still not clear how anyone could get rid of guns when they don't know who has them, how many they have or where they are kept.

Very few non-government employees in this country have assault weapons; those that do are registered with the ATF and pay a tax.
Your "massacre" slam is apropos to those in government that have the assault weapons.

Anyone comes for my (hypothetical) gun, I'll give it to them.

Alcohol was not deigned as a weapon.
Dumb argument.

At approximately 1200 fps?

At approximately 1200 fps?
I think I can do better than that.

OK, I just picked a random handgun and pulled the muzzle velocity to throw a number out!

My target guns were not deigned as a weapon either.
Dumb argument indeed.
