Title: It was HOT this weekend, until I turned on the fan!
Post by: Jaybird180 on July 18, 2016, 02:13:38 PM
...and it felt GOOOOOD.  I'd forgotten that the whirly thing at the front blows air on you and cools the cabin, but it quickly came back.

I took a flight in a PA-28...or more like a PA-27-1/2 considering there were 2 fairly big guys up front and it was 89dF on a 2600' runway.  Cherokees already have an anemic climb rate but thankfully all 150 gerbils came to work that day.

We took off about 6p and tracked a heading out to the practice area, having to remain under the Bravo.  It seems just like riding a bike, most of everything came back to me quickly and it helps when you don't scare the bejeezus out of yourself.

We did some power on and off stalls and steep turns at 59.9999degrees before a Seneca that we couldn't get tally on cut our fun short, so we headed over to a neighboring airport for pattern work.

Do all Cherokees need left rudder on takeoff?  This one seemed like it did.  It's going to be awhile before I can get a greaser.  My height judgment for round out is programmed for Cessnas.

All in all, not bad.  When was the last time I'd flown as PIC?  A look at my logbook says July 2015 :o

Congrats. Good thing you did your 3 take off and landings solo before bringing along a passenger.

Probably only needs left rudder if the rudder trim is set that way.

Cherokees have rudder trim?  Is it of the ground adjustable type?

No, the Warriors, Archers and Arrows I've flown all have had a proper rudder trim knob. I have never flown the earlier ones that were just "Cherokees" though.

As Dav8or said, it's a twisty knob.  I leave it set for cruise flight and just use the right leg trim for take off and climb out.  ;)

Surprised you weren't forward of the CG. Mine would be with two big guys.

Congrats on getting some air time.  As others have said, adjust the trim knob or better yet have the rigging checked for proper alignment.

Sadly, I'm out of currency.  It was a fam flight just to get me used to the feel of the Piper.  Previously I didn't like it, but now it's not so bad; I guess its never bad when your options are limited (I need another airplane).  Next flight he intends to run me through the BFR requirements.

Cherokee is a good honest airplane and one of the most easily landed.  You'll do fine on your BFR.  Glad you got back in the air.

Honest???  It doesn't stall worth a darn.  I expect to feel the bottom drop out.  That's what I call an honest airplane.

Yup, I couldn't get a good stall break on mine either, stayed controllable all the way through.  Great little airplane.  Sometimes I miss it.  Unless I want to go somewhere.

Can you imagine that they designed an airplane where the bottom doesn't fall out?  ;)

Who would want such a thing?
