As a product of an all boys Catholic High School in the Chicago area, I'd say that the desire to build self-reliant, responsible young men is fairly universal. Kudos to the school for posting that sign!

Good on the school for posting and the parents for complying. Critical thinking is almost absent from our public school systems.

Do you have kids in school at the moment? Critical thinking is not absent from the public school system. In fact, my step daughter brought home last night the yearly goals for her gifted class. Goal #1: Critical Thinking. This is not to say I am terribly pleased with how education works at the moment. I tend to agree with the gentleman in the TED Talk video above. Our schooling is too regimented, is negatively affected by the scourge that is standardized testing, and is suffocating creativity of both the students and the teachers.

I agree also with some of the TED points. Interestingly, there is a good case for NOT trying to "teach" critical thinking. Based on the conclusions in this article, you may want to keep a close eye on what your stepdaughter is picking up from someone's idea of what critical thinking is.

I don't think, though, that she is your stepdaughter unless you are married to her mother.

Granted, but it's a lot easier to say than "daughter of the woman I've been with for 10 years".

So why the heck don't you marry her? :)

Because that wouldn't be easier than saying "daughter of the woman I've been with for 10 years."

We did last year and critical thinking was non-existent. Obviously this changes school by school and district by district but talking with others, as well as the school board, critical thinking isn't on their radar.

Who put you up to this?! ;)

Good for them for making students think on their own or at the very least, take responsibility for their mistakes. People forget homework and lunch money all the time, it isn't the end of the world. Some students will actually learn from it and not repeat it.

Yeah. I knew a kid in school that forgot his lunch all the time. He figured out a creative solution. He just beat up a couple of little kids and took theirs.

Was that kid named Clinton?

Did he ever get caught and punished?

No. He was on the football team.

Hopefully life caught up with him then. Bullies are part of growing up, though. Just another thing for kids to figure out. There are people in the world who are mean and want to do you harm. It's up to us to figure out how to deal with it.

Well, look at the thread title! Maybe it's time to ask her. :)
