Title: A Heinlein book I didn't know about
Post by: Jim Logajan on February 22, 2017, 11:13:16 PM
I grew up in the 60's and 70's reading a lot of science fiction, and Robert Heinlein was a notable presence - I read everything he wrote, good or bad. Or at least I thought I had. I didn't know he had written a book titled "Take Back Your Government!: A Practical Handbook for the Private Citizen Who Wants Democracy to Work"[1]. Probably because it was written in 1946 but wasn't published until 1992, several years after he died. Since I only just found it, anyone else ever read it? Is it worth the time to read and still relevant? The cost is inconsequential - if it's a quick good read, I'll give it a shot. I always feel perpetually behind in work and personal projects, by way of explanation. In fact I was taking a mental break this evening from work when I was feeling nostalgic for the days of more leisure time when I read SF and Googled what people considered Heinlein's best books and found someone had mentioned this book.

Looks very interesting. Just got the free sample on my iPad and will let you know. Skimming through it, the story of how it came to light is quite good, and it seems to focus mainly on populism as key, which makes it relevant today.

However, I am thinking of eschewing all politics and political thought for Lent.

Politics exhausts one fairly rapidly.

Someone should tell that to the Pope.

Heinlein (along with Tolkien) are my two favorite authors.

Thanks, I haven't heard of this one either, I'll check it out.

Have you read his rumblings from the grave?  It involves a lot of predictions the he made about the future (our past/present).  It is amazing how accurate he was, and on a lot of the things he misses (space travel) the reasons why are very frustrating.

Well I managed to find some time to read the free sample on my iPad. Was amused to find this summation from Heinlein near the beginning:

Recapitulation—How to Start: Take a telephone book. Look up your political party. Telephone, locate your local club. Join it, attend all the meetings, and do volunteer work for several months. At the end of that time, let your conscience be your guide. You will know enough to know where you belong and what you should do.

I might as well admit right now that the above paragraph is really all this book can tell you. The matters discussed in the later chapters are things which you will learn for yourself in any case, provided you do everything called for in the paragraph above.

If you have skimmed through this book to this point without, as yet, laying the purchase price on the counter, you can save the price of the book without loss to yourself simply by remembering that one paragraph—and doing it!

I'll  buy and read it anywa as time permits,, since Heinlein tends to tell little stories by way of example to make his points.

Yes I did manage to learn about Grumbles from the Grave and read it about a year after it came out (Probably read it in 90 or 91,) The politics book appears to have come out in 92 in support of the Ross Perot campaign, which is likely why I missed it, not expecting any further books and certainly not expecting an intro into how to get into politics
