MB actually makes an "A Class" model, a subcompact with a wee little engine that sips gas and is thus quite popular in Germany and elsewhere.  They'd never import it to the US, however.  It would completely trash their USA brand image as a super-premium luxury car.  Everywhere else in the world, a E-Class is a taxicab.
