Title: Hurricane Irma Tracks Straight Up Florida Peninsula
Post by: Number7 on September 08, 2017, 05:19:29 AM
My brother and sister pilots, if this storm has you in its sight, you need to get the heck out of Douth Florida as fast as possible. Be safe but get moving.

I'm in Oldsmar on the north side of Tampa Bay. Today has been a day of deteriorating odds for my area. As the forecast currently stands, we'll get 9+ hours of hurricane force winds as the storm rakes the coast and passes just east of us. There are even worse scenarios, like the storm staying off shore and then coming directly up the Bay which would be devastating to the Tampa Bay area.

I'm a bit worried about storm surge. I'm not in a flood zone but I am in evac zone C and I'm sure well less than a mile from the Bay as the crow flies. We may head to my mom's house in Clearwater tomorrow. She's in a non evac zone.

Good luck, I hope you dodge the bullet. We just did as Harvey passed east of us. Very nerve wracking.

Wow.  Hope everything is OK!  Be careful!  As my great uncle who was also a pilot used to say.  "These things can kill you."

Anyone hear from asechrest?  I also haven't heard from my cousins north of Orlando. I'm suspecting massive power outages, with the last priority being to charge phones to let us know how they're doing.

Thanks for asking! Tampa area was greatly spared. Feel like we dodged one. After real scary forecast tracks, it made landfall well down state and was only a cat 2 as it passed. We had three families at my mom's place. Lost power around 11PM, and it remains out for her. Wind blew the street light stalk off the pole. Lots of tree debris but no home damage. We had all windowed boarded up.

My own house was unscathed, and my neighbor says we never even lost power, perhaps owed to underground powerlines. Most damage in the area is on mobile homes or from fallen trees. Little to no storm surge in the Bay.

Even Naples, where it made direct landfall, has less wind and storm surge damage than expected. Strangely, the Miami area got some of the worst effects, and it is on the side of the state opposite of the entry point.

We had steady strong winds for a good part of the day yesterday NE of ATL.  Power was out for 25 hours.  Lots of trees down in the neighborhood. One huge one that barely missed someone's house.  Had breakfast and lunch at Cracker Barrel today. They were slammed as everyone else in the same boat decided to get out of the house.  The stuff in our freezer survived and most of the stuff in the fridge made it also.
