I learn on the news this morning that the County Council is voting today to add speed cameras on a major thoroughfare near my home. I’m against it.
They use safety as a buzzword to just lighten our pockets.
It’s obvious that I need to get more involved with local matters. I’d like you guys’ feedback and talking points so I can send something to my neighbors and local representatives.

You’re on target. Look into how much the vendor gets.
They increase rear end accidents exponentially.

In florida the red light camera vendor can nvinced local city commissioners that the revenue bump would offset any negative public feedback. The city shortened the yellow light to increase revenue and both tickets and accidents increased a lot.
The courts have started to force cities in florida to change any ticket from a vehicle and traffic offense to a code enforcement offense because judges dismiss the tickets as a violation of your right to face your accuser in court.
Now our legislature is taking up a bill to make them illegal.... Again.

And there’s data on this?

I keep hearing this, but I am not sure I believe it and I have never seen any statistics to support the theory. Do you have any?
I am not against traffic cameras. But I think they should increase the speed limit, and should also increase the minimum speed limit to be closer to to the maximum speed limit. Most accidents occur because traffic is going at different speeds causing people to change lanes and pass unsafely.
But I would prefer the put money into fixing stupid traffic lights that make you wait at intersections forever when nobody is coming from the other direction.

I don't have any data for you, but I can tell you that muni counselors and city mayors only respond to threats to their job. Tell them that you are starting a commission to remove them from office, or you will strongly support their opponent in the coming election. They don't care about your opinion, only votes.

Here's what I wrote on our local social media
It seems that our legislature has taken a special interest in ***Road*** and abating some of the high-speed traffic. Unfortunately, I'm a bit late in weighing in on this issue as it was posted 10/13/2017 on the County Delegation website (which I don't actively monitor).
Without beating around the bush, I'm going to out myself that I'm not in favor of the legislation. It is my opinion (and I believe that there is sufficient data to support my position) that the measure does not promote safety, but only uses safety as a cover, which is why there is a lot of non-specific language in the bill regarding proximity of placement to K-12 and then higher-educational institutions (Hint: there are no such higher education institutions within range to ***Road*** in **** County).
The bill serves as a means IMO to cause an adverse economic impact to users of ***Road*** without a demonstrated direct correlation between electronic speed enforcement and vehicular collision safety. In fact, I believe that albeit anecdotal, sufficient precedent and data exists to show quite the opposite happens. For example: rear-end collisions tend to increase over the short term and over the medium-long term, as knowledge of the location of such devices increases, driver anxiety increases, causing drivers to compromise peripheral safety consciousness due to over-emphasis on speed control.
If there is an opportunity to weigh-in I'd like to register my objection. In addition, I'd like to register my favor for an updated engineering study to be conducted on improved traffic flows and the appropriateness and human factors impact of the current speed limits posted.
Thank you for reading these few words.

Here in Cary, they put the stoplight cameras in and then took them out again. It seems they didn't actually make all that much money for the city AND they caused a few accidents.
Tell the city council that you don't like them. For whatever else, they are politicians and they react to public opinion, especially if the opinion is going to get someone else elected to their seat.

Nicely written, but WAY too polite. Have you seen and heard the language coming out of DC lately? On both sides, btw. Only advice is keep the threats political, i.e. 'I want to see you defeated, or ousted in the next election, or removed from office by any legal means'. etc.

I suppose "tarred and feathered", "run out on a rail", "drawn and quartered", and "executed by firing squad" are too strong?

But then again, think about the progress made in DC.

That has been our experience too. The city lost so many court cases and the vendor was the one making all the money they eventually decided it wasn't worth it.
I don't recall them causing more accidents, but I do attribute a bunch of unnecessary traffic jams to them.

Uh - yeah. However, here is a good oppty for the OP to flex his racial muscles. Might as well start speaking for all minorities on this. Make up some hoity sounding platform name like 'MAACP' : Minorities Against Automatic Camera Police. Become it's default speaker, and make a website. Like I said - drayma is all they care about. Make it hurt at the ballot box.

Do you attend the Council meetings to voice your opinion... or better yet, organize some other residents to present an alternative plan? Not sure how big your local governmental district is, but our local supervisors are VERY receptive to resident comments, particularly if there are a fair number banded together to present a unified position. It's all about votes!!

If I learn of something that I have an opinion on then I attend. I waiting for the next issue on the calendar which is the environmental impact of a Power company compressor station in a neighboring town.

And there’s data on this?
Google is your friend. I’m going off of information I learned when I lived in Charlotte through 2006. People who used to just go through a light when it was yellow, now stopped more suddenly to avoid a ticket. The driving public had been conditioned to people going through on a yellow, and weren’t prepared for sudden, hard stops due to the red light cameras.
Chicago Tribune published something a couple years ago when Chicago was playing with this idea.
Edit: I took your OP to mean red light cameras. If you’re talking about speeding cameras on roadways, I have no information on that, other than I was caught by one in Kentucky and my wife paid it against my better judgement. It never registered as a moving violation and never hit my record. It was a scam - a speed trap.
