Title: Fresh hit piece on Trump, amazing how someone can get a person so wrong.

https://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2018/02/calling-the-trump-era-by-its-name/552251/

My reply to Fallows:

I had to read the hit piece on Trump a couple times. It was fascinating to explore how the liberal mind(such as it is) works when assaulted. Trying to find the right set of adverbs, adjectives, and nouns to needle the president with must be exhausting work.

Strange the reference to "democracy" multiple times, even after you found the quote from Franklin telling the nation that we are a republic? Sure, the stealing of senator appointments from the states, and the recent federal investment of the re-districting of voting boundaries makes us much more like a democracy every day - but make no mistake, we are still a republic. A nation of laws, developed by a legislature, signed(or not) by an exec, and evaluated by a court owing no allegiance to the voting public. Mob rule institutional US? Hardly.

Then, all this mishmash about 'tribalism' expressed about the Trump admin. Wow, that was powerful stuff. Lets review: The liberals hate Trump. Ryan, McCain, Kasich, and a host of others on the right hate/distrust Trump. Muslim, around the world hate Trump. The media, and many intl power brokers hate Trump. According to CNN even his wife hates him. The majority of the fed circuit courts hate Trump. Illegal aliens hate Trump. Tribalism much there anti-Trumpers? You are in comfortable, enviable company to point the fickle finger at that which you as a block so disdain. Look around at your fellow haters. Such quality company; aliens, murderous muslims, socialists, Malania - the parties must be legen---dary.

Not enough though - you had to take the final step and use the F word. Ooooooooooohhhhhhhhhhh, he is engaged in fascism! Really? Gutting the dept of Ed(stroke of genius), restructuring the EPA, rejecting the intl case for huge transfer of wealth under the guise of 'global warming'(you're going to freeze your nuts off tonight BTW), and reducing the 'crat power. Attacking and diving headlong into the broken FBI/FISA apparatus. All this says 'fascism' to you? Your concern for the bureaucratic structures and norms of power in the beltway is -- touching. That you so care about all those useless drones from MD down through VA on the Atlantic is something that brings a tear to the eye. Nevermind fly-over country. Forget about the upper midwest(coldest Jan for decades), and TX/OK/KS/UT/NM? Tribal! You told us already, nyuk, nyuk, nyuk.

That which can be seen as clear hegemony and the resurgence of conservatism is mis-evidenced by those who have fallen into obscurity as fascism.  The liberal hand is no longer on the levers of power, and that stings. Obama was the greatest thing for the GOP and conservatives in a century. Coupled with the effrontery of Hillary, not even outspending the GOP 3:1 was enough to steal the show.

What's important to you, and those of your caliber in the Fourth Estate, is not the running of a nation. It's not the power returning to the people, from the untold minions of 'cratocracy, it's not greater wealth, and more independent thinking by putting the US first, what you need to do is affix some putrid LABEL to this. Yeah - that's what is going to move Dems forward. Call someone a nasty name, because making up a devil is far, far easier than dealing with the fact that WE are in power now. I'm amazed the weaponization of the FBI hasn't descended on the libs. I'm amazed that Trump - though seething with anger has not really fought back against this swell of hatred. I'm shocked that the liberals are actively working to make US citizens lives harder, and less just by representing everyone on the planet EXCEPT the people in America.

You're all bankrupt. Both literally and figuratively. The DNC has a balance of -$millions, thanks to Hillary, and the gang who can't shoot straight. GOP is awash in cash. There are no ideas from the left except 'hate Trump and call him nasty names'. What a game plan! Keep it up, there won't be a democrat between Malibu and Penobscot  bay in a few years.

he replied concerning my lack of using my real name on the internet, and the fact my prose was done in comic sans.

I'm convinced that the Left is who they are because they are arrogant at their core.  They are so arrogant that they actually, truly believe that they are better people than everyone else, more advanced, smarter and more enlightened.  Because they're so much better, they and ONLY they know how the world is supposed to work and the rest of us should just shut up and listen to their orders.

I actually find it shocking that I would reach this conclusions.  When I was growing up, I was taught that mankind has an inherent equal status in the world. We all start from the same place of being human and we will all end up the same in the end.  Subject to not harming others, we can do whatever we want and can do.  Forcing your will on others is the ultimate sin because it is asserting that you are more important.  Nobody is superior to anyone else, we've tried that many times through history and it always ends but never well.

I'm open to being convinced that I'm wrong, but sadly this is where the evidence leads me.

^^^^^^Hence the Left's constant, and I mean constant, characterization of Trump voters/supporters as uneducated, knuckle draggers, and racists/sexists.  They still can't believe Trump won so have to make it seem like anyone that voted for him is STUPID.

They Left, for the most part, are elitist, statists, and globalists, and American Haters.  Not all, but most.

I'm not sure your tag line fits you any longer.

The "Left" are just people. A fairly broad swath of the population. Some of them may be arrogant and believe they are better than everyone else. But we can say that about any broad slice of the population. To suggest that they are all arrogant and self-important to their core is stupid.

Now, 'round these parts, you'll certainly get some pats on the back for your comment. You've already gotten one from Anthony. It's funny that he remarks negatively about The Left labeling the whole of Trump voters in response to someone labeling the whole of The Left. What kind of arrogance does it take to stand on one side of the political divide, lob the same garbage as those you're railing against, and apparently believe your position the "right" one?

Let's be clear that when you're talking about millions of people, they are not all anything.

In response to the OP - good post. My brother sent me that article and said I should read it. I didn't make it to the end. It's the same stuff that's been going on since Trump was elected. And while I am a Liberal and no fan of Trump, I've fought against the opinion of those on my side who can't seem to help ridiculous hyperbole after rightfully losing an election by putting up a horrible candidate. If we were to believe all of it, Trump would literally be Beelzebub.

I'm pretty sure my tag line doesn't mean what you think it means.

Obviously everyone is an individual and no characterization ever applies to everyone.  There are fanatic on both sides, but I don't see the ones on the Right trying to tell us that they have the special understanding of how everyone else should live.  But I do see the leadership of the left being arrogant to the point that I'm afraid they're working their frenzy up to a purge.

We see all the time how they characterize the right as stupid and ignorant.  Didn't Jimmy Kimmel just imply that yesterday when he said that you had to be smart to be on the left?  I've heard leftist bigots espouse the position that conservative don't deserve to attend universities because they're too stupid to succeed.  That is especially frightening when you consider that some of those same people are on college admission boards and may actively be seeking to blackball conservatives.  This kind of bigotry has no place in our world.

This is despicable to anyone who has a liberal bone in their body.

To that I reply: "deplorables".

While I admit that not 100% of 'the left' consider themselves as the superior intellect, I would say that all those in authority, or power consider themselves far above the knuckle-dragging, bible-thumping, redneck, jingoist, misogynist, tribal, facist, goobers on the right. So - maybe it's only 93 or 97%. Lets not forget that the party of the left supported, endorse, and lived the dream of slavery, and later eugenics.

Oh, I forgot one that really has bugged me for years now. It should live in infamy.

"You didn't build that."

Sheer arrogance. 1) "You"; personal, and direct those plebes below, slightly more than common slaves. 2) "didn't"; Clearly and negatively pejorative. Almost like a threat, or at least a strong refutation. 3) "build"; To build, create, design, construct, assemble, make, produce, generate with my TWO HANDS(and maybe a power tool). 4) "that"; this, the other thing, anything, everything, all structures, ideas, concepts, flights of fancy, drugs, procedures, concrete, steel, rockets, cars, locomotives, planes, ships, skyscrapers, cities, roads, bridges, airports - YOU didn't build any of that. It was all ME.

the ultimate liberal mind.

Iti s hilarious to see liberals who play the "All conservatives are Bible thumping, uneducated, hicks, who are only qualified to do what they are told and grow our food," trying to pretend to be the voice of reason when their pathetic sense of superiority gets them in trouble.

To that I reply: "liberals", as used pejoratively by so many, including our current President.

I hate to break it to you, but feeling that you (general) and your viewpoints are superior is a bipartisan deal. You can put your fingers in your ears and "la-la-la" all you want, but it is the case. You do have it right that those in political power (guess who holds current majority political power?) often consider themselves far above us.

I'm sorry but "liberals" is descriptive. If one takes it as pejorative, that's not on the one using the word 'liberal'. As for the conservatives using pejoratives there is plenty of that going around as well. It seems however that the left is far more adept at their effrontery(see article linked). Trump is the worst offender by far, and I can say that a lot(including me) don't care for it. However, one of my faves is 'Pocahontas'. I thought that one went straight as an arrow(pun intended), and was richly deserved against Warran.

I don’t feel like you are distinguising between believing yourself to be superior and believing a philosophy to be superior.  Like many closet liberals, I consider recognition of equality to be the paragon of virtue.  If you reject that then I don’t become superior, we just disagree.  I believe in freedom and you believe in...well, not freedom. There isn’t another choice.

You do get the difference between Liberal and liberal, right? These days, a Liberal is anything but liberal.

Rather than using 'liberal', I usually prefer 'progressive'. Which in my opinion is far more oxymoronic in practice. Traditional 'liberal' policy expresses equal opportunity(which I happen to hold dear). Current 'progressive' policy is to use the power of the state to enforce an equal outcome(which I abhor).

I have some 'liberal' leanings, but never 'progressive'. I think the liberal platform of Truman, and to a lesser degree Kennedy had some merit. The progressive platform of Sanders, Warren, Boxer, and Schumer make me ill.

"Dick head" is also descriptive for many. Mainly bald men, I suppose. It's on them if they take it as a pejorative.

Uh no. The proof is actually in your statement. The norm in English lexicon for one who has no hair is bald. I dare you to find any synonym anywhere with 'bald' and 'dick head' or vice-versa.

Synonyms for bald
adj having no covering
bare barren hairless stark naked depilated exposed head

Further, 'bald' is an adjective and needs no helper: "Jim is bald". However, 'dick head' is a compound noun, and needs a helper: "Jim is a dick head". Or; "Jim is going bald". Rather than; "Jim is being a dick head".

Woosh. Whether the word/phrase is descriptive or not does not determine whether it is being used as a pejorative.

Until about a year ago I had a ridiculous bowl cut I'd had for roughly 30 years. Good stuff. You can see it on the YouTube video from my POA jet ski post. BTW, I still have that jet ski and am considering selling it for my first real boat.
