His mistake was answering any questions at all. There are two things one says to LEO when they want to question someone. 'Am I under arrest?' 'Am I free to go?' Unless the answer to the first is yes, in which case one more word is needed: "lawyer". If one is not free to go, it becomes custodial and lawyer will be needed again.

It is remarkable that the department that cowered outside until the shooter ran out of ammunition, NOW choose to bully a minor, refusing his request to record their lawless behavior.
What courage.
I guess in a liberal world that is what passes for courage.
What pussies.

We are living in a police state if you are a law abiding gun owner exercising your rights. A son can't go shooting with his father at an indoor gun range while using all safety measures? This is pure partisan politics reminiscent of the KGB, and East German STASI. Disgusting

It would have been epic had the kid looked those bullies in the eye and said, "Unless my father is present, we are not having a conversation. Unless there is a video recording your threats and intimidation, I will respond to nothing you say, ask, or threaten. Until an attorney is present to preserve the my civil rights that your are so pathetically violating, I refuse to cooperate in any way, shape, or form.

Unfortunately the schools will not teach these kind of things (rights under the law) and its up to the parents to teach the kids what to do in these kind of situations.

K.I.S.S. applies. Just ask if you are under arrest. And keep asking if you are free to leave. Don't dialogue with them. Get up and walk out. If they detain you, say 'lawyer'. This is rock solid 1st, 4th, and 5th A ground.

This kid has balls. The government is trying to cut them off.
My bet is in this kid.

I hope the parents have the inclination and resources to sue the crap out of the PD and the school district.

If only they had spent that much time on the kid that did shoot up the school.

I'm afraid you are barking up the 'qualified immunity' tree with almost no chance of success. The bar for violating a LEO qualified immunity is so high that it's rarely tested. In this case, I think the facts would fall far short of the standard, however it wouldn't stop me as a parent from looking into it. Given the background of the school, I would say that the whole admin and staff as well as the kids are on heightened awareness of any kind of gun activity. This would provide the PC for the cops to start an investigation(to look like they were doing now, what they should have done before with the actual shooter in the school). Justified or not is a fine line, and most in the community would find it reasonable, under the current conditions. Moving past that, to a Terry situation, where the suspect is clearly not an immediate danger to the officers the end of the investigation by interrogation is over. At that point, the kid is free to go, even though the cops want to keep him there. Which is where it is time to say 'bye, I'm leaving - unless this is an arrest?'
I doubt anyone in the community, specifically the mayor, or city counsel would back the kids parent over the LEO. Which is a shame, but life in a liberal paradise.

Well they kind of did, but the School District, FBI, and Local Police CHOSE to ignore all of it. This is willful negligence on their part, and there should be prosecutions, firings, and jail time. In addition, the Local Police also CHOSE not to enter the building when they knew shooting were taking place.

IIRC the mayor specifically ordered the pile of dog shit sheriff to avoid arrests of high school kids to avoid the bad publicity.
Typical democrat bullshit that nobody wants to address.

Sounds like an abuse of power to me.

In case anyone would like to advise him of his stupidity. In my opinion this is a firing offense.

From the Fox article:
Officials at the Florida school where 17 students were gunned down during a mass shooting on Valentine's Day are investigating allegations a teacher compared pro-Second Amendment student Kyle Kashuv to "Hitler" and called him "dangerous."
The comments were allegedly made by Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School American history teacher Gregory Pittman, an outspoken gun control advocate. Pittman's reported remarks came after photos posted to social media showed Kashuv visiting a gun range with his father.
Miss Pittman should be fired. In my high school, one year, we had a display in the libary on WWII. In it was a fully functional MP-40 submachinegun under flimsy plexiglass, with one of those dinky saw tooth locks. Nobody bothered it.
