The concern with an article V convention is how to control it once open. I can think of a lot of things that I would specifically NOT want the convention to bring up. However, the list I saw had a lot of things that sound good. But - pardon me for being a realist, but I seriously doubt a convention controlled by politicians would EVER in a billion tries enact a balance budget. Sorry, I'm being negative.

An Article V Convention is rare because it is convened by the states, with no involvement with the federal government whatsoever. So it bypasses the very people who would fight against such constraints, and will be run by the very same state politicians that are subject to balanced budgets at the state level.

As for a runaway convention, the requirement for 3/4ths of the states to rainy anything makes me pretty comfortable that no wacky shit will make it out if the convention.
