High wing.
They are much better airplanes.

Lastnight, I was up past midnight on Controller looking at planes.  It's a carryover from my emotional attachment to the deal that I am reluctantly walking away from that I posted about on POA.
Someone PMd me and I gave him the seller's number.  As I type this, I think I'm going to cry....

If I offer you a hankie, and my heart-felt sympathy, will it help?

Not really.
I have to be patient.  The decision to sell my C-172S wasn't easy but now I'm thinking that it wasn't such a pain in the butt after-all.  It's just the oxygen from being at Sea Level talking.

I think a Tiger would be a good choice, or one of the Mooney M20 series.  My next plane maybe an M20C, E, or J.

You do that too, huh?  Late night cruising on Controller, ASO, TAP - all of the sudden it's 1:00am. :)

I didn't catch your story on "the other" board, but can you paraphrase it for me?

I feel like I'm on an emotional roller coaster. A CFI that I've flown with that's now doing airlines called me today and we got to talking about it and there may be a deal in the works...with me in the middle. Oh the agony.

I'm thinking about a Grumann or Commanche or Cirus.

I've never flown a Grumman.  Closest I've come is Cap'n Ron let me sit in his once.

I had a Tiger for almost 15 years.  It is a fun plane to fly do to the light control forces, that have a somewhat "sporty" feel as not much input will get a lot of roll and pitch.  It is reasonably fast (135 KTAS) but will not keep up with retract Mooneys.  The sliding canopy has a lot of benefits.  It is a very easy plane to fly, and land if you stay on the numbers.

Title: Re: Planes are really cool
Post by: acrogimp on October 30, 2015, 09:18:30 AM
I've lost ASI several times over the years due to insects/spiders as well as a more recent Mx issue.  No big deal.  Fly attitude and power setting, use GPS for additional situational awareness if you need it.

Most lightplanes land so slow that only super short <3000 foot runways would possibly be a challenge without airspeed indications.

I am a ~500 hr COMM-ASEL-IFR-TW guy with time in more than 40 different make/model aircraft but I think most pilots have a sense for where the plane is happy in the approach/landing phase.

A good exercise is to just go out and do slow flight every now and then and remind yourself just how slow they will fly and what it feels like.

As far as what plane to get - define the mission as well as you can, and then find the best deal that meets the mission - only you will know if you made the right choice or not.

I will say, once you buy STOP looking at Barnstormers or Controller, or Trade-A-Plane or whatever, will drive you crazy if you keep looking.

I agree with what you said, but the question was specific to Grumman flying.  I've heard that it can get away from you as it's not a fly by feel airplane.  Or maybe I have been misinformed???

Understood, sorry for the confusion.  I have time in the Cheetah and Traveller and don't think of them as different 'enough' to be a cause for concern but YMMV.  They are fun planes, local club recently added a Chiger (Cheetah with the Tiger STC), its' a decent choice for short-medium distance X-ctry.

San Diego.  YakCave is at Gillespie Field (KSEE), EAA Chapter 14 is at Brown (KSDM), and office is close to Montgomery (KMYF).

Tigers, Cheetahs, and Travelers are docile airplanes although they do have better control response, and are lighter on the controls.  Tigers and Cheetahs are pretty slick for a fixed gear plane, so will float if you come in hot.  If you don't display good speed control, and try to force it down onto the runway you can get into pilot induce oscillation.  The cure to that is to just hold it off if you have enough runway, or just go around.

The two seat AA1 (original slick wing) demand speed control also, and you don't want to get behind the power curve on these low, and slow as they will break pretty quickly, without too much warning.  The later AA1A, AA1B, and AA1C have a different wing but still require discpline in speed control, but give you a bit more margin.  They don't "get away from you" unless you either don't have training in them or just not flying them properly, but they are not any more dangerous than other planes if you fly them like they should be flown, and learning that is not difficult.

Those Norman Rockwell Comannders look nice, too, as do the Beechwood Deboners.

I've owned both a Traveler and a Tiger.

Loved the responsiveness, yet stable enough for serious IFR work without undue strain.

Also love  the Tiger/Arrow comparison - very similar performance, but the Tiger does it with 20 less hp, fixed gear and a fixed pitch prop. Roy Lopresti deserves a lot of credit.

My Tiger:

Anyway, another Tiger would be on my short list if the Class 3 medical is ever expanded to include it.

FastEddie- You've had 2 Grummans and a Cirrus that you've talked about and your choice is to buy another Grumman.  Have you flown/owned a Mooney or Bonanza?  What are your thoughts on those?
Title: Re: Planes are really cool
Post by: FastEddieB on November 02, 2015, 10:53:53 AM
I have a whole bunch of Mooney time. I also trained a few Commercial applicants in Mooneys.

They're fine planes, solid and fast and well made. But not my cup of tea.

1) I find them a bit claustrophobic - you really wedge yourself in there and the panel is high and close. Don't like the lack of a door on the pilot's side.

2) I find them heavy on the controls - especially when compared to Grummans.

But as a fast, efficient traveling machine they are very hard to beat.

Let me try that YouTube embedding function:

That was not long ago, in my friend's E-model that he installed a turbocharger in. At his home strip, Kings Port, near Lake Placid, FL.

Precious little Bonanza time. Did get a bunch of hours in a Debonair, which is very similar. Again, solid planes no bad habits. I would probably not opt for one because of the retractable gear - in the same class used Cirrus' are coming down fast enough in price to be a viable option.

One of our EAA members is alive today because Mooneys are fast.  He had a heart attack while the group was cleaning up a remote airstrip.  The decision was made to get back to the biggest hospital(with cardiac unit), not the closest rural one.  My husband said it was the longest 20 minutes of his life as he sat next his friend.  The ambulance was waiting and later the doctors said that 15 minutes later, our friend would have died.  Happily, he has cashiered at the last three pancake breakfasts since then, and is building a plane.  I like Mooneys.   :-*

I remember that thread.  I think you made a good choice.
If you buy a plane you are not sure of, you are sort of stuck with it.
If you walk away from a plane you are not sure of, I promise there will be others just as good or better.

Sort of like women.

Our ASI quit on us one day.  So we turned back for home.  Leslie was PIC (she is always PIC in our family).  She was scared to death because she never practiced a landing without it.  But she had a beautiful landing because she used all of her senses to make sure everything "felt" right.

Does Leslie have her IR?  During my IR training, a very important step was to know and commit to memory the pitch and power combinations that yielded a specific performance.  Then when my CFII covered up instruments, including the ASI, it was literally no sweat.

Not yet.  She has passed her written, and she has had some IR training, but the training was interrupted because her Veterinary Specialty Board Certification (ABVP-Feline) was due for renewal, and that took all of her time for quite a while.  Then we sold the Cessna and bought the bonanza and then sold our business, and one thing after another delayed her getting her IR.

But it is definitely on the list for 2016.  Right after we get moved into the new house we just closed on today.

How about if the panel clock fails?  Does it matter if you're VMC or IMC?

Not just that, but the whole AM/PM, or 24 hour thing. If it should go to 24 hour mode, then confusion and chaos ensues. You cannot fly unless you know what time it is, so VMC, or IMC, either way best to pull the 'chute.

I've not had the pleasure of piloting a Cirrus.

So, in the Warrior I trained in, when I pulled the throttle back, the RPM would drop...is that a situation to pull the chute?
