Two different takes on this story:

https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/employees-of-nursing-home-where-12-died-in-power-outage-charged-with-manslaughter/ar-AAGphTE
Aggravated manslaughter??? What the hell? We already have a bad enough shortage of people willing to be nursing home caregivers. Who's going to want to do that now?
-
I wondering what the monday-morning-quarterbacks expected the workers to do.
-
There are a plethora of LAWYERS that promote lawsuits against nursing homes. Yes, as in anything there is occasional negligence, but as with personal injury, Tort Law, and medical malpractice a lot is thrown up to be settled out of court to avoid legal fees. Lawyers use Plaintiff Greed for personal gain. It's disgusting.
-
If they did everything they could reasonably do they'll be acquitted. But they still have to go through the expense and pain of a court trial.
-
Nothing happens to the employees who bugged out instead of staying and trying to help?

Yep, and defense attorneys aren't cheap. They could be financially wiped out. Not to mention the emotional and psychological harm.

This.
And even if acquitted, it will still follow them for the rest of their lives. Every job application, or anything that involves background checks.

With a major hurricane projected to hit the East Coast of Florida, I think if I worked in a nursing home, I would be taking a leave of absence about now. Or just quitting. But then again, I don't have that gene that makes me want to sacrifice myself to help others that I don't know.

Before this travesty I would have stayed to try to assist. Now that these folks have been indicted, yeah I'd cut and run.

Yep. And even more frightening is who will they target next? What disturbs me the most about this case it that there is nothing these people DID ... it's all based on what they DIDN'T do. They didn't make a big enough fuss about the power outage, they didn't insist the hospital come get the patients, they didn't anticipate the patients would be that vulnerable to heat stroke.
That leaves open all sorts of potential to charge anyone with anything. I didn't get out my chainsaw fast enough after a hurricane and remove the log on the sidewalk in front of my house and somebody tripped on it.
-
Did anyone read the article(s) about the deaths?
Were the four workers indicted the only workers that stayed on the job?
It's a 152-bed facility. I don't know what the normal staffing level is for that particular nursing home, but I'd be willing to bet large sums of OPM that there are normally far more than 4 people on duty.
Why were those four are charged?
-
My guess is the root of the charge is the families of the dead patients. 12 dead, that’s a lot of families to get together in a mob and harass the authorities into holding someone, anyone, responsible (other than the families themselves.)

Legally if negligence can be proven, such as bringing up employees on charges, this increases the payout in civil lawsuits.
Always follow the money. Those family members are more interested in the payout than for the lost relatives. Sad but true.
