I see this in countless news (not opinion pieces) stories. eg: "Risk of recession due to Trump's trade war".
https://www.cnbc.com/2019/10/07/nabe-economists-lower-outlook-see-rising-risk-of-recession.html
If someone is taking punches at you for years, then you finally hit back, is it YOUR fight?
Am I just obsessed with this because I am partisan, or is it lousy journalism?

It's lousy journalism
Correct.
Plus biased predictions (I’d like to see the party affiliations of the “expert” economists they polled) plus pessimistic take on current indicators or even inaccurate portrayal of current state of affairs.
The recession predictions assume China will never blink and will accept economic contraction rather than negotiate trade deals.
The picture painted of our current economy is like grey storm clouds. I don’t recognize it, I see the sky is clear and the sun is shining. There seem to be two alternate dimensions superimposed on our reality. Democrats are living in one and Trump supporters in another and they aren’t even recognizable as the same time and place.
I caution myself though, my sunny view could be a bit of rose colored glasses. It is true that protectionism (tariffs) can be bad for consumers but it’s not that simple. Consumers and workers are mostly the same. We want cheap products but we also want jobs and with high wages at that.
The root causes of the whole mess are many but include:
Minimum wage laws in the US
Unions in the US
Heavy regulation in the US (such as OSHA and EPA)
Child labor laws in the US
China’s sleazy slimy criminal business practices
China devaluing its currency
Look how much of this is our own fault. But the last two on the list are big.
Open trade under these unfair circumstances has benefited China and been to our overall detriment. It’s lifted China out of poverty (caused by their communism) and eroded the US standard of living. The Chinese middle class is growing while ours is shrinking. Cheaper products are good in the very short run but as it turns out cost more in the long run. They’ve become disposable. Goods in America were made to last. Goods made in China have to be repeatedly replaced because they suck.
American capital and technology built today’s China NOT communism. The worst part is that there are people who believe the reverse. People who say, “China is doing great despite some capitalism.” Ignorant American millennial, I will link to that video later if you want.
Investment and trade between countries is generally a good thing for everyone. But not when the playing field is too uneven and it has been for too long between the US and China. Trump is trying his best to rectify that. Even he can’t fix it in a day.
Journalists and left wing economists predicting doom only makes it all the harder; it risks self fulfilling prophecy. Yes, we are at risk of recession, but it won’t be because of “Trump’s trade war”, it will be because of the past 50 years of policies that got us here in the first place but even so the single biggest factor causing a recession will have nothing to do with China, it will be if a Dem wins in 2020.

Journalism no longer exists. It is partisan politics with 98% of the Media now the propaganda arm of the Democrat Party. The Media IS the Democrats. They want to cause a recession in the hope of getting rid of Trump. They would rather people lose jobs, homes, etc. and suffer than have Trump reelected.

Trump started the Trade War. He owns it. Give him credit for one thing, he said he was going to do it in the campaign and he did it. Won't fault him for keeping his word.

See, that is where we disagree. He didn't start the trade war with China or any other country. He is merely the first one that put his fists up to defend our country and fight back. I might not agree with some of his tactics, but his objective is right on and what the country needs. Otherwise, we would be dying a slow death as we pump money and technology to all of our world competitors.
If Trump owns anything, it is bragging rights over doing what is right for America.

Trump started the Trade War. He owns it. ....
do you really honestly believe that?
or are you just stirring the pot?

Already responded to that.
Give him credit for one thing, he said he was going to do it in the campaign and he did it. Won't fault him for keeping his word.
Ok, you at least got that much right. But it proves you were wrong about it being Trumps trade war. If it were Trump's trade war, then what was he promising during the campaign? If we weren't already in a war, (without fighting back) then what was Trump promising to do something about?
-
We've been LOSING the Trade War with China and most of Asia and Europe for DECADES. Trump is just now standing up to their UNFAIR Trade Practices. And it is working in our favor. Enough is enough!
Steingar, do you know what "Balance of Trade" means? Look it up and see where we are with China and other countries and have been for DECADES. Republicans and Democrats have been kicking the can down the road, and we've lost JOBS, and MONEY to these THIEVES.

We were already in a Trade War, have been all along. All Trump did was deploy a new weapon. What you are calling the Trade War, is just Trump's tariffs and renegotiations, but those are not the only weapons in a trade war. There is also theft of intellectual property, currency manipulation, and undercutting manufacturing costs on all fronts by not having pollution and safety regulations, not enforcing China's child labor laws such as they are, and outright CHEATING. What we have had with China all along is NOT a fair trade relationship, but an unfair skewed one, favoring China and destroying American manufacturing, while seducing consumers with cheap prices that turn out to be piss poor quality. That's a simmering cold war, and has been since we opened back up trade with those unethical communists (the Chinese).
You're right that Trump promised to do something about it, and he's kept his promise. He did not promise to "start a trade war". He promised to do something about the fact that we've been the losers in this relationship all along.
I admit tariffs make me very nervous. But so does the nuclear bomb, and using it against Japan was the right thing to do.

Well dang you said that whilst I was typing the same idea. You're more succinct.

well, to be fair, a lot of individuals (and companies and corporations) have been selling their souls for a quick buck and ignoring the ramifications. Some of those people were even regular posters on POA.

Well thanks, but it's a rarity! :)
It is interesting that the Left loves for the U.S. to just roll over for our trade partners many of which just want to take advantage of us, and we've let them for a very long time.
We got lazy after WWII because we pretty much had the only remaining manufacturing base that was undamaged by the war. Europe and Japan were in ruins, England was broke, so we had a virtual monopoly for a while. Things changed quickly, and corporate management were caught flat footed. Add very high union wages and the rest just happened.

China is a bad actor internationally, but there are lots of ways to react to that. A Trade War is but one of them. History will judge if it's the correct course of action. My guess is Trump will capitulate with some sort of "deal" that leaves the status quo largely in place the minute Americans really feel the pain from the tariffs. He'll declare victory, tell us how great he is, and move on.

That would be the obama doctrine you’ve just typed.

We have been in a trade war with China for decades. The only thing different under Trump is that now we are resisting their assault on us.
