I heard he was quite the asshole in person, but a hero for what he did in WWII and for aviation.

I may get kicked off the board for this, but I think it was Bob Hoover who was the asshole. And Yeager was a nice guy.

Actually met Hoover at an air show. Insincere and egotistical.

I met Buzz Aldron and thought he was a pompous fool.

I met Yeager and was disappointed at his ego and rudeness.

I met Hoover at OSH and he was congenial, but he was very old and frail.  Probably past his ass-kicking phase of life.

I never met Yeager, but I heard he wouldn’t give autographs to anyone without charging for them, and was a dick when approached by airshow fans. This is second hand info however.

Yeager had a reputation for being rude, egotistical and just plain crotchety.  But, you're right.  At that age, and after being badgered by fans most of his life, then maybe it's justified.  However, others have been as or more famous and managed to be fine.

Someone who I know personally and trust knew both Yeager and Ed Dwight (look him up). Yeager denies making life harder for Dwight but...it was a cultural norm to do so and it was right up Yeager’s alley, he was glad to be the (as an above poster said- asshole).

Dwight is still living, just without the love he once had for Aviation.

Hmmmm.  It all boils down to whether Dwight was selected as affirmative action virtue signaling although they didn’t call it that back in those days, or whether he really was fully qualified. If fully qualified then Yeager is a racist asshole. If he was selected for tokenism but was in fact inferior in performance then Yeager was correct to oppose him. But of course it gets complicated. If you aren’t accepted by your peers then it’s hard to perform your best so allowances have to be made. But only to a point. Probably none of us are in a position to judge what the truth was.

Ultimately 14 were chosen out of 136 astronaut applicants, roughly 10%.  We do know Dwight was pushed into the group of 136 by Washington politicians, including Kennedy.  That he might not be in the top 10% of that elite group is no evidence of anything.

Stay fact based.

I love that JB is back, but why do we always have to go back to race?

I just completed this audiobook which by the way is outstanding.

When he commanded the 8th Tactical Fighter Wing in Ubon AFB in Thailand, Olds’ deputy commander was Daniel “Chappie” James Jr.  those two men flew the F-4 Phantom, and were extremely successful.

The legend is that Robin and Chappie were known as “Blackman and Robin,” but Olds’ daughter Christina denies that rumor.

But what was notable was the fact that Chappie being black was not mentioned in a single sentence in the book. That legend was never mentioned in the book. In fact I first knew he was “Blackman” after looking him up in Wikipedia.

Chappie retired as a four star general.

Since Chuck Yeager was the first person to fly in excess of Mach 1.0, and also due to his career of a test pilot why should he not get some recognition for his achievements?

Or are you trying to cancel him?

Good question, and I know where you're going with it, but let me pre-empt you there:
Yeager may have achieved a milestone in aviation - and should be credited with such, however when his story is told it should be just as remembered that he was a poor example of a human being and in such regard NOT held as an example to be emulated. IMHO, on the balance, he did more harm to humanity than good considering what was happening in the American socio-political arena in the mid-1960. Ed Dwight could have helped make a better American social fabric conversation as it is my understanding that he was very popular with the MSM and a good spokesman for the Air Force, even holding his tongue on what he was suffering when the microphone was in front of him; people these days don't do that.

Ultimately, when Dwight passed AF Test Pilot School (TPS) (he was in that 10%, strictly by merit) he went on to NASA training. He had a scheduled simulator flight the same day Kennedy was assassinated. When the news broke, his flight was cancelled and that was the end of his career in the Space Program.

I haven't been given permission to reveal my source, (he sent me a photo of himself and Dwight at an event)...my source knew both men and is himself a TPS graduate. I didn't expect that nugget when I asked about the culture of the Test Pilot program, if he'd heard the news of Yeager's death and if the stories about Dwight were true. For several years now, I have been trying to get him to do a biography before the context of many of his accomplishments are lost to history.

Well if his source knew both men, he might know something more than we do. Not to say the source itself might not have his or her prejudices. We all remember the past through distorted lens. Still he knows more than say me for instance. In any case, I don’t like media or social media trashing people who just died for the sake of their grieving families.

At what point do you consider in the calculation of "their merits" what they had to overcome to get there? Two men arrive at the same station in life, but one had to do more to get there, which one has the greater future potential?

I feel sorry for you that that is the prism through which you look at your life.  It must be so constraining to constantly look for the racial angle to everything.

We will never reach a color-blind society if all some people see is color, or lack thereof.

And the reason that you "feel sorry" is because you actually HAVE TO believe it's a debilitating condition. Changing your viewpoint would disrupt your world. And that's a product of your own unconscious racial conditioning.

Not speaking for Lucifer, but I don’t worry about someone’s merits, or what they had to go through to get to some station. What relevance is that supposed to have for me at this point in time?

The fact that people had different experiences in life, and some of them were very hard, is a nice thing to know when someone succeeds at something. It’s a footnote, and shouldn’t be the main focus of the treatise.

Using my example of Chappy James, above, should he have been awarded with some honor for his service in Vietnam because he had to train the Tuskegee Airmen during WWII?  Do you think Robin Olds treated Chappy more favorably or less favorably because if it, or didn’t give a shit, as long as Chappy did his job?

That doesn’t mean that we don’t need to ignore people who have risen above their circumstances. In many cases it’s an actual historical lesson, and should be celebrated. In other cases, it can serve to be an anchor, always dragging one down to the lowest common denominator - ones’s race.

Are you aware of the Commemorative Air Force’s “Rise Above” program?  We have two “Rise Above” programs:  Red Tails, about the Tuskegee Airmen, and WASP, about the Women Airforce Service Pilots.   Check it out:  CAFriseabove.org

You’ve been lied to by all the Sociologists and race profiteers who have convinced you that you are “special” because you’ve had to suffer greatly at the hands of people who unconsciously hate you, but just don’t know it.

No, I feel sorry for you because you’re incapable of enjoying the things that bind us - flying, for example, and instead you HAVE to focus on the things that divide us.

My identity is American right now. I know some blacks that feel the same way. They don’t seem hung up on going farther to get to the same place but I’m not black so I kind of reserve judgment. But I am female. I have a right to talk about sexism and misogyny. I guess I have a right to preach at men about their unconscious sexist conditioning.

Rush says I need to work on being more liked on PS. Let's review what I did wrong?.... Pointed out a historical fact, much of it is now public knowledge- just because it might offend the racial sensitivities of the group. Ooops don't do that again /sarcasm

OTOH, as an initial member adopter of PilotSpin (from the other board) this place was established as a platform to openly discuss controversial viewpoints without vitriol...errr...censorship errr...forget it.....with the hopes....errr...idea that perhaps we can entertain as well as educate ourselves about things that have the ability to affect our life, liberty and something about pursuit of happiness...or something like that.

The last 12 years brought about widespread adoption of social media. As a side-effect, people are discussing all manner of subjects from their own POV and inviting others to see life as they have always seen.

The mistake you make is assuming that I am monolithic. I understand that's your tactic of trying to minimize me or what I have said. Doesn't matter. But don't swing the pendulum too far, I am consistent in my views and would testify to the same, if ever asked. Ooops - I already have done so, in the Federal Judiciary System....and won. Nevertheless...

Even the Marine Corps is capable of evolving its views. Before my time in service, I'd never met or seen in the flesh a self-described "Redneck". A particular one (senior of mine) drove a beat up Ford truck with an Ole Dixie bumper sticker on it, just like in the movies. We had conversations then and we both came away with a greater knowledge of different backgrounds (at least I did - he never asked about mine). The current Commandant of the Marine Corps has outlawed the display of the emblem on all Marine Corps installations. This was probably prompted by other overtly racist symbology found on MC installations (swastikas, nooses,..) since I was in uniform. Racism "in my day" was more covert, enough that I couldn't make a case for it even though my Vietnam era uncles (soldier and sailor) warned me about the Corps' racism. I later learned about its racist heritage through academic study of the institutions' "accomplishments".

So yes, I am one of the Few and Proud, but I still don't shy away from acknowledging that the Corps did some F'd up things. That's called psychological balance. The ability to acknowledge facts, even the inconvenient ones. Can you say the same?

Nice try. “Stan has changed...” - from what or to what?

We were having a robust conversation, right up to the point that you called me racist, due solely to color of MY skin which, according to you, is inextricably connected to unconscious racist bias.

For 12 years I’ve been called racist, either by the race hustlers like Obama, or by the democrats due solely to my affection for our president. Well to all of you who are race mongers, fuck off.

This is why the ubiquitous “we need to have a ‘conversation’ on race” is such bullshit. What YOU want is for me to kneel in shame for something that you claim is within me. Sorry, ain’t happening.

I’m an American first and a woman second. A minority! You want to talk legit grievances, sit down with a woman sometime. But to be fair you have to sit down with a white man too. Every “group” has been attacked and suppressed and vilified and treated unfairly by some other group at some point. American Indians? Warred with and massacred each other. Same with African tribes, South American tribes, Asiatic tribes, all human groups ad infinitum. LGBT groups form, coalesce and dissolve in acrimony around internal disagreements about which “group” is more oppressed and how their internal hierarchy shakes out.

Justice Sotomayor said she would use her “experiences as a wise Latina” in making decisions. I’d much prefer she use THE CONSTITUTION.

Color and gender and race don’t matter to justice and truth. I’m reminded of Rumi ... “Out beyond right and wrong there is a field. I’ll meet you there.”

Don't mistake the assholes on this forum as racists.  They are assholes to anyone that disagrees with them.  They are no more racist than you are.

Their acceptance of people that disagree with them is on a par with the liberals they all despise.  Some are worse than others.
You’re a pedophile. You unconsciously lust after small children, mostly young boys. Oh, and you’re an asshole if you disagree with me on this, or say anything derogatory to me.

Is that how this conversation thing is now supposed to work?  I’m just trying to understand the rules so I can play this game.

He will deny he’s a pedophile. We all know that all pedophiles deny they’re pedophiles, therefore that is proof that they are pedophiles!

“I’m not a drug addict.”  Denial, therefore proof you’re a drug addict!

“I’m not a racist.”  Denial, therefore proof you’re a racist!

Absolutely.   I'm sick and tired of the whole "racist" game.   And those who scream it loudest are the most guilty of it.

Well to be fair, blacks in the west have had a worse deal than a lot of other groups in modern times. Particularly deplorable are the inner cities, where, cities are a problem to start with (see the article I posted elsewhere on why) as they tend to concentrate corrupt elitists who use a disadvantaged population for votes, but also by sending our jobs over to China and then the drug war and the for profit prison system and social programs replacing fathers in the home, all of that just wrecked the black communities.

Ironically, “racist” Trump was doing more to address all these problems than any other president in history.

But your points are correct. Native American tribes were brutal to each other. In African prehistory there were different ethnic groups that invaded and took over land from each other before Europeans ever arrived. All humans everywhere do this.

I’m not going to flagellate myself for being white any more than a black should flagellate himself for being genetically Bantu because his ancestors took land from the Khoisan.  I have taken up the cause of police brutality and criminal injustice and do what I can to help (write letters to officials including Trump) but I will not bow to leftist guilt manipulation over the color of my skin.

Not sure where you're from, but people who grow up in the South usually come to grips with racism early on.  The old days are long gone here and anyone who even makes a racist joke gets called out.

Back when you were in the service, the Dixie flag was used to denote southern heritage, before it was turned into a political symbol.  Merely being a Redneck and having a flag on your truck did not make you an automatic racist.  Yes, that history included slavery and Democrat led efforts like Jim Crow and the Klan.  It's not something to be proud of, but we'll take our cue from history and learn not to repeat it.  Honestly, these days, the few racist people I meet in the south all have New Jersey accents.

We were having a robust conversation, right up to the point that you called me racist, due solely to color of MY skin which, according to you, is inextricably connected to unconscious racist bias.

Actually if you go back and review each post, the conversation had a derailleur at post 16, then you made another go of it at post 19 when I didn't bite. I suspect you have hypersentivities about any racial conversations, but you had good "help" from Anthony throwing Bourbon on that fire and here we are. If you go back to review it, when I came on the thread everyone was already talking about Yeager being "an asshole". I just added an additional anecdote, one that had been journaled during his lifetime that he died without adequately defending.

I'd heard about Dwight a few years ago. When Yeager died it brought back to memory a vague recollection of the story until I did a Google search and a few articles appeared and I started reading. My own curiosity led me to call my retired AF friend to pick his brain about what I'd read to verify for myself if the articles held any water. He's not an "anonymous source", he's someone that lives about 25 minutes from me that I met at the airport and we have a great relationship and I'd like to keep it that way. Compromising his privacy, let alone my own is likely to jeopardize our candid relationship and further dissuade him from writing the Biography that would share MUCH more about what he's seen and done. When I came here it was because I was curious to know what PS would say about the story and Yeager's character with this Lego being put into historical context. Imagine my surprise there was already a thread going about Yeager's death.

If you or Anthony don't care about the story, so be it. But it's a relevant piece of aviation & American history and in an alternate universe could have had a trajectory altering effect. Lambasting me (Lucifer) doesn't change it and only serves to put a nail in your own coffin. I'm unfazed by the ad hominem attacks.

Thanks Rush for your honest attempt to bridge a gap in my viewpoint and/or communication style. But this is an old argument and I've long since realized a lack of ROI. I'm not even entertained anymore and I'm often reminded of the admonition in Matt 7:6. At least I did learn something from KC Joe years ago as we butted heads and then got to a better place of mutual respect. Let me know when this thread raises in tone.

Being Black is my identity. Be bored then. Stick your fingers in your ear and refuse to learn anything...see if I care.  ;D

No being a faux VICTIM is your identity and many others in the Black Community who use skin color as an excuse to avoid accountability and responsibility.

Your diagnosis has the surgical precision of a blind man with ear-plugs at 1,000 yards with a double-barrel shotgun.

No, his "diagnosis" is spot on.
