What was surprising was the backtracking on calling witnesses. Haven’t read anything about the reversal on that.

It's an astoundingly stupid process. A witness is chosen. Both sides depose the witness. Then the senate votes on whether or not that witness will actually testify. I had no doubt that the democrats would vote against any defense witnesses and all we'd hear is witnesses from the prosecution. I don't know why the democrats reversed their vote to allow witnesses. I'm glad that this particular clown show is over. Now Trump can get back to leading the opposition.

I don't believe that's how it's done, remember that a Senate impeachment trial runs according to the Senate's rules for impeachments, not judicial rules.
Here's a link, interesting discussion on the bottom of page 15. Apparently only a Senator may request that a witness be called, the house managers and Trump's lawyers could not. At least that's how I'm reading it.
