Title: Colonial pipeline
Post by: Rush on May 11, 2021, 07:11:54 AM
I heard there is panic buying in NC, lines at gas stations and so on. Anyone know if that’s an exaggeration? There or elsewhere?

I didn't see it last night, but down in Fuquay.  I think people are only just starting to realize what "pipeline shutdown" means with regards to their fuel.

I have to drive to Charlotte on Friday to move Matthew out of the dorm.  Hope I can get gas to fill up the rental by then.

Hmmm, can you run a regular car on 100LL?

I’m going to NC in a couple weeks and if it looks like there’s going to be shortages I’m canceling. No way I want to deal with that in a rental car. I’ve got business in Charlotte and Raleigh. A lot of driving.

Just got a text from my daughter. She said everyone in Cary is panic buying and her car is empty she is in line at a station right now hoping they don’t run out before it’s her turn.

Cary = Containment Area for Relocated Yankees.

I lived in Charlotte for 6 years and drove to Raleigh and all over the state frequently.  I don’t miss it.

Clayton = Cary Like Area Yankees Trying Out Now

Cary was a neat place back in 1969. We lived near Cary until 2010, I don’t miss it either. It has been completely ruined.

She texted back she was able to fill and they weren’t limiting how much. That’s probably next.

I am sure there is some panic buying.  I suppose most people are topping off their tanks any chance they get and they are probably filling up their portable tanks.  But it is harder to hoard gasoline than it is to hoard toilet paper.  When you fill your pantry or garage with gasoline, it tends to smell bad and run out under the doors.

Yes, I saw panic buying today. Gas stations running out and other packed full with police directing traffic.

University is saying it might extend the move out date for students if there’s no gas.

As of 10pm last night, 60% of gas stations in Raleigh are reporting out of gas.  That seems to be the hardest hit place.

Flashback to the 70s Raleigh.

Raleigh and Charlotte are still showing most stations out.  Granted, Fuquay is small (40k people), but we only have 3 stations with gas this morning.

The area between Greensboro and Salisbury along I-85 seems to have recovered - about 80% of the stations there have gas.

It's starting to get better.

What I was surprised at is how close to the cuff they're running with JET-A.  I would have thought they had a few weeks on hand at least.

I heard the pipeline is open now but that Raleigh was still 75% stations out. It will take a few days I’m sure to resupply. We’ll probably be good to travel next week but we are actually considering canceling anyway.

I called American Airlines to ask if there was a charge if we moved our flight and no, they’ve waived that. Maybe we’ll reschedule for fall. Maybe the stupid damn mask mandate will be gone by then. (HA!) I might be in real danger of being thrown off the plane because of not keeping my mask on between bites of food.
