Title: Is big pharma all evil?
Post by: Rush on November 24, 2021, 06:41:02 AM
Hodgkin’s Lymphoma used to be a death sentence. But the drug companies came up with drugs that saved my daughter’s life. Capitalism and the “evil profit motive” did that.

Alzheimer’s is an absolute scourge. Especially now that we are extending life with treatments for other conditions plus the boomer generation is going to overwhelm resources to care for these demented people.

So I have mixed feelings when I see announcements like this. I want to find a cure. But is this going to be one more false hope? To sell a drug to the public that only has a minor benefit?  My daughter’s cancer cure wasn’t minor, it was 100% effective.

Firstly, glad to hear about your daughter

I agree that it is important to recognize the enormous amount of research and testing to bring drugs to market. And there needs to be a big financial reward when one works because of all the ones which will fail.

Unfortunately the whole healthcare marketplace is so grossly distorted by government intervention which gives rise to “big pharma”. Regulation almost always favors the large entrenched players and stifles invention.

In the case of medicine and medicines, we have have professional licensing combined with the FDA to create a real mess. In the case of Covid vaccines, it gets even worse with the manufacturers being immune from liability. When has that ever worked out well?

That’s the perennial argument I have had with my brother for 30 years. He was always, “Big drug companies and big any company is evil,” and I was like, “It’s only when they get in bed with government they’re evil. Or become a monopoly. Don’t you own mutual funds? Do you even realize where that money comes from when your fund grows? You own pieces of all these evil big corporations you idiot, and you’re profiting from capitalism.” And he’s like, “Well you’re a poopy face!” because like all leftists that’s where they’re logic inevitably leads.

I suppose, being a Democrat, he probably suddenly thinks Pfizer is altruistic.
