Title: (28 March) Shooting in DC caused lockdown
Post by: Bob Noel on March 29, 2016, 08:12:39 AM
I'm reading newspaper articles about the shooting in DC 28 March.

"The shooting prompted officials to lock down both the Capitol building and the White House..."

It is interesting to note that there are no reports of the gunman shooting.  Apparently the only people who discharged their weapons were police or other LEO.

<sigh>

I noticed that myself.

What is the <sigh> for?

My understanding is that he went through a metal detector, pulled a gun and aimed at police, and police in the room shot him. He did not discharge his weapon. He was known to DC law enforcement.

The lockdowns were precautionary and were lifted.

My guess is that the sigh was for the fertilizer this incident provides for all sorts of partisan spin, especially the kind generated specifically for people who only read headlines or thread titles, not the full content.

Ah, I see. The quibble is the inaccurate headline. I missed it.

"Aimed at police" was not something that was written in anything that I've seen on the incident as of yesterday.

Once the weapon is drawn, I feel the police are completely free to take whatever steps necessary to keep the person drawing the weapon from getting a good aim.

I don't disagree.

Maybe we'll get lucky and have it locked down for 535 suspicious characters until January 2017.

News is it was a pellet/air gun designed to look like a Beretta.

Makes zero difference in the story as far as the response went. If you spend even a second trying to figure out if a gun is real or not, you may get to see what comes out of it to settle the uncertainty.

But it does offer insight into the mind/motives of the subject.

One wonders what the headline would be if that had been a kid in the ghetto that drew that on a cop and the cop fired.

Dunno. But the perpetrator is black, so if folks wanted to run with the racial angle the fodder is there.

Which one are you referring to as the "perpetrator"?

But the perpetrator is black...

That's honestly the first I've heard that.

You're right in a sense Eddie.  Do you think you might have heard about it if the dude was a right wing guy or someone affiliated with the TEA Party?

Larry Dawson. Allegedly.
