Title: Whole Foods decision to pull lobster
Post by: Bob Noel on November 27, 2022, 11:42:16 AM
"FISHING INDUSTRY - Whole Foods decision to pull lobster divides enviros, pols"

Apparently Whole Foods will no longer sell lobsters from Maine.

It's actually an AP article.

Why? Not humane to kill ocean bugs?

Apparently harvesting lobster endangers some rare whales

It’s got to do with saving whales.  They get caught in fishing nets or something.

Which according to an article I read has never happened in the lobster fishing industry in Maine.

Does lobster fishing hurt whales?
The whales can suffer injury or death when they become trapped in equipment that connects lobster traps to the ocean floor. The organization's report said that “current management measures do not go far enough” to prevent such risks and to support efforts to save the whale species.Sep 15, 2022

I love the claims made by some (not directed at anyone here specifically) that whatever measure “doesn’t go far enough”

nothing short of killing the industry will ever be enough

This is just another solution looking for a problem, IMO. Seems like the current system works if there has been no whale deaths attributed to lobster fishing.

I haven’t dug into it but this is probably the case.  Wacko groups issuing demands based on their inaccurate guesses and institutions caving to them out of fear of not appearing woke.  This is why the UK shut down coal power plants after a single Greta Thornburg tantrum.  Their parliament was intimidated by that little brat and the worldwide coverage she was getting.   Now people in the UK and all over continental Europe face death from cold this winter or financial ruin from high heating costs.

The grip the wacko environmental cult has on the world has got to stop.  It’s the single greatest threat to civilization.

You are right.

Right whales are truly in danger of extinction, largely due to being hit by ships and entangled in fishing gear, but as far as I know, lobster fishing has not been part of the cause.  But it makes people feel good that they are banning lobsters because people feel sorry for lobsters being boiled alive.

As far as I'm concerned, I just buy my lobsters elsewhere.  I've been to whole foods about as often as lobster fishermen kill whales.

But I do want to see more protection for right whales.  Real protection, not just feel-good measures.

I guess Red Lobster will have to change their name to Red Shrimp.

Judging from some of the patrons, perhaps Red Whales?

Ah, left wing activist.

We aren't doing enough to save whales, but lets make sure killing human babies is a right!

Babies and adults through poverty and higher prices for food and energy.  Evil fucks.

The crazies on the left fuck up everything they get involved in. This reminds me of the protections they lobbied for on feral horses in the west. I use feral because they are a non-native invasive species. The horses are overpopulated, destroy the environment, and eat all the food that other species depend on. Yet because people love them, they are protected and they can't be culled like hogs or coyotes. Stupid.

Yet the Bureau of Land Management go to arms over  changes in the grazing rules against the Bundy family, rounding up and confiscating cattle.

It was fucked on both sides, but the Bundy's were their own worst enemy in that fight.
