Somebody dropped a glass bowl on their stove top today, I bet.
Oops.
Crash...
Oh, shit!

I love my glass top stove. It is almost 15 years old and every week when the maid leaves, it looks like brand new.
-
Mine is thirty-six years old. Had to have one element replaced early on, still working great.

It’s a long story. I’m in a really bad mood today.

My wife hates hates hates glass too stoves. She was a pastry chef and is a master cook of everything. Gas only for her.

Yea, but..........FJB says we shouldn't be using gas to cook...........

I HATE glass top stoves. We got a new glass top stove / oven when we did a minor redo of the kitchen before selling the house. After a while I got a nice crusty ring on the burner I used most. No way to get it off. Scrubbing just made the glass dull. And the stupid thing stayed hot for a loooooooong time after turning off. Yeah, there was an idiot light saying the glass top was hot, but who looks at those things? I'm so much happier with my gas stove and the heavy iron grates. That's how civilized people cook. (Note: my wife really wants a convection or magnetic or whatever stove. She loves those things. Never tried one, but I hear they are better than gas. But then we're back to glass tops. But without the heat. Maybe. Who knows?)

Totally agree. Glass sucks. Slow to heat, slow to cool. The very opposite of gas, which is infinitely controllable to your every whim. Have sausage lentil soup simmering right now. Our idiot governor, of course, is banning gas stoves in new construction in our state. The industry is fighting back. Liberals ruin everything they touch. They are why we can’t have nice things.

Yes. Late Thursday afternoon.

This is what happened today. I was told I can’t eat vegetables for 3 days before the procedure so I had a box of Rice-A-Roni for lunch and I was hungry. But my husband had just made his lunch and somehow got butter all over the burner. (How the hell he gets the butter from the inside of the pan to the outside bottom I have no idea but he does).
So I need to scrub it clean before I can use the burner to make my Rice-A-Roni which calls for a large skillet and there is only one large burner. I can’t clean it until it’s cool and it took FOR FUCKING EVER to cool down while I’m starving to death.
Finally it’s cool enough to clean up the butter and I decide to use my copper bottomed Revere Ware instead of the non stick skillet I usually use because I thought the Rice-A-Roni would do better in it. Well the skillet would not sit flat. It would when cool, but as it heated it warped and wouldn’t make full contact with the burner so I have this one small hot spot and the rest wouldn’t cook right.
My old electric element stoves, the spiral elements actually conform to the pan bottoms when they heat. It was never an issue. Gas of course would be no problem, it’s a flame. So it took FOREVER to get the stuff browned and to bring the water to a boil after it was added. And then I notice my husband had the “sensor” feature turned off. When the sensor feature is turned off it’s like every setting is ratcheted DOWN, it’s cooler. So I’m waiting for it to take the usual forever to heat up but no, it’s going to take the extra long forever.
I despise this thing. We are talking about what it will take to convert to gas and it would be a major renovation. It’s on an island with no good way to get a gas line to it. We’ll have to tear up the whole kitchen floor and take out cabinets on one wall, or maybe run it through the attic and then have a stupid gas line coming out of the ceiling dropping down to the island.
We might eventually bite the bullet and spend the money because one of these days my husband is going to say “I’m tired of hearing you bitch about it.”

Do you have a basement or crawl space? If so run the gas line under there then up thru the floor to your island.
Yes gas rules! 👊

For the uneven heating problem it seems like buying pots and pans whose bottoms stay flat when heated would be the cheapest short term solution versus a kitchen remodel. "Cookware for glass stove tops" seems to be one web search phrase that may help find options.

I'm all electric. We have a natural gas, underground pipeline going through my neighborhood, but no gas service to our homes. Ironic, huh? I could get propane, but that's more expensive, so I just deal with the electric stove with coils. Thank God, no glass top!.

Never thought to see if they made special cookware for glass tops. The ones that do best are my Visions glass cookware but we don’t use them much because they have issues of their own, like taking a long time to heat up, and the lids have gotten chipped over the years. My favorite overall has always been copper bottomed Revere Ware but only the original made in Chicago. When they moved the manufacturing to China they went to shit too.
-
We are also all electric, no gas in the neighborhood. Never looked for glass cooktop cookware, but have not had problems with the stuff we use. Mostly use a small fry pan the most for cooking breakfast and sometimes some dinners. Use the grill a lot spring through fall and also the flip up Ninja.

One of the first things I did when I bought my current house was have a gas line run and replace the glass cooktop with a gas one and put in a gas fireplace. Our gas utilities ran the line from the street to our house for free. We just paid for the plumber to run it inside and hook everything up.

Glass or gas fireplace? We have a gas starter in our fireplace, but my wife is allergic to wood smoke. We are thinking about what to do there. She likes the look of the glass pebbles with the flame coming out but an alternative is to convert to gas flame with the concrete wood looking logs. Either way we need to replace the firebox and we're just not motivated enough for that yet. Maybe when the snow starts flying and a fire in the fireplace would be very cozy.

Yep, that's the stuff. Best cleaner we've found, but it does take a lot of scrubbing. Of course if I listened to my wife and cleaned up right away it wouldn't be a problem. So I used a wet cloth to get the spills off while the burner was still hot before they baked on. That lasted until she saw what I was doing.

Decades ago it dawned on me that skillets, pots and pans with heavy metal bottoms that don’t warp, and often with a copper layer, result in the best and most even cooking. So over the years I’ve accumulated a collection of heavy, high quality ones. They’re insanely expensive, which is why I accumulated gradually. Some I found in discount outlet stores, marked way down because of a small surface flaw. All-Clad is one of the best brands. I have not been so impressed with Calphalon brand. It is possible to have a heavy metal base that doesn’t heat evenly. I’ve also hunted around in higher-end restaurant supply stores. The people who work there often are passionate about cooking and give good advice on cookware.

Our water is so hard if I use water on the cooktop it leaves mineral residue. I can dry thoroughly to avoid that but if the burner is warm it evaporates too fast. Scrubbing off mineral residue is its own set of problems. I have to watch covered pots carefully so they don’t boil over.

Gas insert with fake logs. It would have been $10,000 plus to fix the chimney, etc., to burn wood. The gas insert was $1,600 and $500 to run the gas lines to it.

There's a gas line at the end of my road that serves the new development down there. I'll have to see if they plan to run it down our street because a lot of my neighbors have propane tanks as supplemental heat and I assume for cooking also.
-
We have a gas starter for the fireplace. Two 20lb propane tanks are plumbed to it.
-
And another thing. No friction. Pans spin around in circles if you try to stir what’s in them.

I guess they assume that most cooks have two hands. ;)
