Title: Florida inmates complaining about living conditions
Post by: Little Joe on December 17, 2023, 04:45:45 AM
Well, I have an idea!
If you can't do the time, then don't do the crime.

Instead of investigating the issue and blaming people, they should be publicizing this and warning would-be criminals that it isn't the absurd idea of "three hots and a cot" in Florida.  Prison is and should be punishment.  If you don't want to be punished, think again before breaking the law.  Prison is not about reforming criminals.  Prison is to protect citizens from criminals.

Quote
Inmates use one word to describe life within Florida's prison walls: deplorable.

Molding food, improper portions, sauna-like temperatures in the cells and more are making inmates feel that their lives are unbearable.

Complaints about their quality of life come just weeks after inspections shined light on the horrible conditions plaguing Florida's prison system, but inmates say these problems existed long before reports were released — and the state's incarcerated are desperate for change.

Inhumane living environments and unsanitary food options are just a few of the major pitfalls revealed by separate investigations of the state and federal prison systems in Florida.

"It's pretty bad here, and I have been to some bad spots," said Alexander Curry, an inmate since 2013 who's currently at Florida State Prison.

Florida prisoners are hopeful the reports will kickstart well-overdue improvements.

Not unique to Florida.  They’re just doing a story on it because Florida bad now, having gone red.

I don’t completely agree with you. The Constitution forbids cruel and unusual punishment and an argument can be made that unbearable living conditions and moldy food is cruel and unusual (for a first world country.)

Even so I wouldn’t care if the prisoners were all legit criminals. But too many innocent people are convicted, or are incarcerated for “crimes” that shouldn’t even be crimes such as selling marijuana.

Our prison system is hopelessly broken. It’s an unholy alliance between government and private companies who take taxpayer money and then cut corners to maximize profit.  I’m not saying the answer is total government run prisons, that might be just as bad.  Personally I think we should do away with prisons for all except the most dangerous offenders, encourage the public to be armed and to take out anyone who tries to assault or burgle them. Instant death penalty.  Except in blue states the victim would end up in prison for defending themselves.

I'm more a  fan of Beretta, although generally prefer the CZ line of firearms.   Like Robet Blake though, from the Little Rascals onward. What a career.

Do it often enough and it's no longer unusual.  Since it's "cruel and unusual" removing unusual negates the clause (it's not "cruel or unusual") so there you go.
