We go see a lot of movies. We're AMC A-List members so we can see three movies a week. Tonight we went to see I.S.S. It's about the International Space Station when a war breaks out between the U.S. and Russia. There are three Russians and three Americans on board. The newest American is black lady and early on in the movie it is established that she is also gay. As soon as that was established I already knew who the hero would be and lo and behold, I was correct. My wife does think in that way and when I mentioned it at the end, she was a bit unhappy. She is conservative, but doesn't look at the world the way I do. You might say she has rose colored glasses.
Maybe it ruins things for me and not for her, don't know.

It ruins it for me when the black gay female hero isn’t attractive, charismatic and talented. If they are, no problem. I want the best actor period, not diversity for diversity’s sake. There was a black female actress in a Scandinavian show I watched where most characters were white (because the country is probably 99% white) but she was mesmerizing, just a joy to watch. So you know they cast her because she was perfect for the role. Same for the lead in the 1968 film Night of the Living Dead, a black man (in 1968!) who was cast because he auditioned better than the rest. Watch shows made in Nigeria, a 99% black country, and they’re all black but all interesting talented characters because they chose the best ones, not needing to worry about skin color quotas.

It belongs in fantasy fiction, not normal fiction which should approximate real life, otherwise it damages your ability to suspend disbelief and hence ruins the entertainment experience.
You can bend the rules of physical reality in fantasy fiction. For example, in the original Heavy Metal (1981), Taarna the Defender is a fantastic warrior character and wouldn’t be the same if male. In video games such as World of Warcraft your powers are equal whether your avatar is male or female. I don’t think anyone has a problem with that. You sometimes want to present as female for social and flirtatious reasons, but you wouldn’t want your fighting powers to be affected by your gender.
Likewise being able to ride an extinct pterodactyl as a flying mount is equally ridiculous but we accept it without question in fantasy genres. But throw something like that into regular fiction without first establishing a plausible real life mechanism for bringing it about (such as a Jurassic Park style lab) and the immersion is ruined. In normal fiction you are identifying with characters within a world that follows the physical reality we all accept as default.
And the truth is women are on average weaker than men, outmatched physically in nearly every way, and don’t have the same testosterone-fueled personality that makes men more aggressive fighters. Sure, once in a while we find a feisty female on the rare end of the masculinity bell curve, but it’s not normal, and when you force it into all your characters in all your stories to make a cultural diversity point, you create jarring cognitive dissonance, not enjoyable entertainment.
