This article actually brings up some good points.

SO MUCH of our politics is based on illusion. Something can look or feel a certain way but, on closer inspection, turns out to be untrue. Two examples, one from the Democrats and another from the Republicans, show the ways in which false assumptions and beliefs can mislead us.

Snore. I like the fact that Senators aren't willing to spoon and cuddle with Cruz. It reflects how he has exposed their game of going along to get along.
I find it ironic how people are crowing how much Trump "crushed" Cruz in NY. The fact is, Cruz got more Republican votes in Wisconsin than Trump got Republican votes in New York.

Except it is damaging him in his run for the White House.

The system doesn't work that way though, as we have been told over and over. What does count is Trump is 2.5 million votes ahead of Cruz and as of today 300+ delegates ahead, with the next 5 contest all showing Trump winning.
And now that Cruz has no mathematical way to get the nomination on the first ballot he and Kasich are essentially spoilers. Cruz is playing an end game in that he HOPES for a contested convention and can procedural win on a 2cd or 3rd vote. In doing this he is running a risk of striking a death blow to his future in politics if he can't pull it off. If he does fail (and those chances are high) there is no way anyone will back him for future office elections.
But that's a decision he has to make. As Clint Eastwood said "Do you feel lucky?"

I keep seeing this thing about Republican votes in NY. Just how many freaking registered Republican voters do you think there probably are in NY?
BTW, Trump did crush Cruz in NY. Last I looked Cruz got exactly 0 delegates in NY and thus lost ground to Trump.

BTW, don't the "rules" state you have to have won in 8 states to have your name placed in nomination? How is Kasich going to pull that one off?

The point is that you don't hear Cruz complaining how the system is rigged, or that Trump is cheating. Those statements by Trump when he loses are nauseating.

And you have no understanding of the folks that Trump is speaking to when he says that.

From my understanding Kasich is hoping for a contested convention as well and by a 3rd ballot he hopes that he will be the chosen one. Long shot for sure.
In reality, I think Kasich is vying for a VP slot (I know, he has said he doesn't want to be a VP). But I do believe Trump will offer Kasich a VP slot and Kasich will ask his delegates to support Trump which easily puts him over the top on the first vote.
Just my opinion.

I think I do.

Rules for this year's convention won't be drawn until the weekend prior. Whether the 8 states criteria remains in effect is not yet known.

Didn't we go over this a few days ago? The rules that were adopted for the 2012 convention are the temporary rules for the subsequent convention, unless they are changed. There are no rules that need to be drawn if the delegates choose not to change them. In that case the 2012 rules, including the 8-state rule, stand.
I posted links to the rules on GOP.com.

They meet the weekend prior to the convention and are tasked with approving the package of rules that will govern not only the convention but also the Republican party for the ensuing four years. Once a package is passed by a majority of the committee, it must be ratified by a majority of the convention delegates on the floor. Then, and only then, does the Republican party have an official set of rules by which to operate.

Yes we did. The fact remains the rules can, and probably will be changed, just prior to convention commencing. The area in bold seems to indicate we are in agreement.

The rules are subject to change by the delegates at the convention, not by the RNC or some secret kabal.

Again, agree.

Playing word games and semantics.
Does anyone here actually believe the delegates appoint themselves to go to a convention? Does anyone here believe a person wakes up one morning and says "Hey, I' think I'll go to Cleveland this summer and be a RNC delegate!"
To be a delegate you must be in the party. To be in the party and work within the party you must get in with the right people. Show up at a party meeting one day and tell the leadership "I'm here to be a delegate at the next convention!" will get you a lot of blank stares.
The leadership picks people to be delegates. It's partisan and if you don't play by the leadership rules or appease the right people, you ain't playing.
Please try to tell me that the various state RNC committees don't play favorites and don't pick people based upon their likes and dislikes, and if you do, provide evidence. (one exception is some states do put delegates on the vote during primaries, just not who the delegate actually supports)
If someone is a delegate and goes to the convention more than likely they will have their leadership from whatever state giving them direction. Don't listen and do it your way? Don't expect to ever be a delegate again much less any position within your state party. Go along to get along or look elsewhere.
So please don't sit here and tell me how the delegates won't change rules or will and won't do this or that. And don't be so ignorant to say the RNC leadership doesn't have any say in the rules or how they are made.
This ain't my first rodeo and having been involved in Republican politics on a state level previously it goes without saying the party leadership calls all of the shots, period. Rogues need not apply.

Lucifer nailed it. I've been involved in Republican politics on the County and State level.

Agree 100%
My Father-In-Law ran as an R for US Congress in '72 and he tells the same story. All politics is a game where only the cunning and connected win, but when you get to the National level, the behind the scenes games reach new heights and determines everything.
-
What will be interesting is to see what the RNC does with their power. I don't envy them. Trump is a loser. If he has the most votes and they pick Cruz, good luck getting Trump's anti-establishment supporters to go for another Republican candidate that the "establishment" anointed. I suspect that would be fatal. Choice: Loser who can't win the WH or loser who could cost them in the Congressional elections as well.

It seems like a coincidence bu the time time a Clinton ran for President, another make believe conservative popped up to make sure the Clinton candidate won. Ross Perot and Donald Trump have so much in common.

It's a vast right wing conspiracy I tell ya...
