I would have preferred Ron DeSantis or Tulsi Gabbard. Vance is MAGA, so won’t move the needle on non-MAGA people. I don’t think Trump needs to reinforce his base, especially after the assassination attempt. I have no problem with Vance, I just think Trump could have benefitted from these two.

My wife pointed out that while they say nobody with a beard wins elections, it seems like half the millennials and Gen Z males (can’t quite use the term men) wear beards. I see that in my own firm.
I doubt they played into Trump’s calculus in picking Vance, but it couldn’t hurt.

Yes, he is real strong with the rust belt and working class. The “common man” which is one of Trump’s cornerstones.
What I’m unsure of is his foreign policy talents, but then, there were no potential picks where I thought I knew how they’d be, and for that matter in 2016 I didn’t know how Trump would be either.

Me too and agree with you about the Pope. The proximal reason I left the church was its ban on birth control, seeing what serial close-together pregnancies did to my mother. (Although in the end, she said many times she was grateful for every one of her children, and mourned the lost ones.)
But the more pervasive reason I left was that I had trouble with the idea that a man (the Pope) was the interpreter of what God thinks or wants. I wasn’t supposed to figure it out for myself. Like there is no way God would speak directly to my heart. I had the same problem with Protestantism which simply substitutes the Bible (written by men) for the Pope, and bypassing that argument by claiming the men who wrote the Bible were divinely inspired, more special than say, me, to know what God thinks or wants.
Not that I claim to know what God thinks or wants. That’s the whole point.
I have no problem with Catholics or Protestants and I understand why they are. I was there, Catholic as a child and went through a Protestant phase as a teen, then as a young adult explored the other major religions. Lo and behold I discovered a common thread in all of them, even supposed multi-theistic ones like Hinduism. Or pantheistic ones like Taoism. They all circle back to the idea of a single omnipresent Creator who manifests in multiple ways. The Trinity in Christianity for example.
The differences in religion boil down to simply what name you call the Creator and the mundane rules you’re supposed to abide by in daily life. One religion says you can’t eat pork, the other has no problem with pork. Okay, I can’t take any of that seriously. I do agree with the big ones, like don’t commit murder. But I resort to my conscience to outline my morality which if you’re honest, everyone does.
What religion does right is provide a stable structure for society. The Ten Commandments is an excellent foundation for our legal system. A constitutional society with freedom of religion is the best mankind has come up with and there’s nothing wrong with Christianity being our cultural legacy. Personally I think it should be defended. Especially against theocratic invaders who want to replace it with low-level freedom hating religious expressions such as sharia law. Talk about stupid rules; women have to walk around covered up looking like a walking sack of potatoes.

Anyway, I just finished watching “Hillbilly Elegy” on Netflix. I had read the book when it came out but that’s been eight years ago now. The movie isn’t exactly the most entertaining and I guess outlines his early life but doesn’t get much into the point he made strongly in the book, which is when you’re raised in poverty with no father and a dysfunctional family, it’s virtually impossible to escape unless someone takes focused interest in you, and guides you out of it.
I watched Vance’s speech last night and it inclined me to like him more, not that I disliked him, I was unsure if he is the best pick for VP. However I conclude that I must trust Trump’s judgment. But then my husband said to me, “Trump picked Pence.” So there’s that.
There is one thing about Vance that I absolutely love. His roots are literal hillbilly, the iconic flyover-country demographic, hated and mocked by the left. Picking him is like a giant Fuck You to the soy boy urban liberals. With this choice Trump made zero concessions to the establishment elites, no fear that choosing someone from this scorned marginalized demographic would hurt his chances. It shows that he is supremely confident he’s going to win, so much so that he picked a MAGA running mate rather than a GOP-approved RINO. It is therefore also a message that MAGA is taking over the Republican Party.
He may be confident but we voters mustn’t let our guard down. The Dems plan to cheat like hell. Unless they manage to assassinate him.

Fair enough. That he went to Yale is a mark against him in my mind. But at least he wasn’t a privileged trust fund baby. But after say, Dan Crenshaw, I can understand being guarded. We haven’t seen his true colors yet. Time will tell.
