For a week the hurricane forecasters have moved the track of the storm to be named Debby here, there, and somewhere else.
Tonight the hurricane tracks all seem to agree that Debby will introduce herself to Floridians somewhere between north of Clearwater to Cedar Key. The longer it stays over water the higher the winds.
The thinking is a cat 1 or 2.
My. Bride and I decided to err on the side of caution and I’ve staged the steel hurricane shutters at every opening for erection tomorrow early. The kids are far away, so it’s just me and my wife. The shutters are corrugated steel and pre-sized. The foundations were installed into the concrete above and below each opening.
It will take a couple of hours and by about 12-2 pm we are expecting the first of the tropical storm bands to begin.
Right now we are bracing for winds between 65 and 115. Gusts will be whatever they are. We are pretty close to the gulf, so as it skirts along the beach we will be in the way of all the outer bands, then the full force of whatever Debby decides to become.
We spent the day helping get homeless people off the streets and park benches and into the county and church shelters. Some of the homeless veterans are terrified of being caught indoors and won’t stay, but a bath and couple hot meals will help.
Sunday looks to be a bitch.
-
I’ve been watching that and thinking about you FL guys.
-
Take care and be safe.
This is the most active hurricane season ever on record.
-
Global Warming!!!!
-
Take care and be safe.
And be sure to send money to the government. That will reduce the hurricane threat.
-
The 11 AM update has the system slowing down as it negotiates with Cuba, which might. Ean longer over the hot gulf water.
No idea… yet.
-
Apparently Debbie has decided to be a bitch about it.
We are expecting somewhere between 6 & 15 inches of rain and it has started to fall. Heavy wind and rain, but nothing much to be concerned about. They think it will rain for at least 24 hours, but could go longer.
We shall see.
Shelters filled up and sand bags and water are the biggest demand right now.

Meanwhile, over here on the East Central coast of Florida, we are experiencing mild temperatures, pleasant breezes and a break from the killing sun. Hope it lasts. I went for a long bike ride this morning and never worked up a sweat. Very unusual for Florida in August.
But we could use a little of your rain. Our yards are drying up and my rain barrels are empty.

We’ve had lots of rain over the last two weeks.
Our biggest threat is over saturated ground and tree roots giving way, with flash flood waters for good measure.
I suspect you’ll get plenty of rain later tonight.

We’ve had lots of rain over here too. Flood warnings almost every day. But it looks like it’s stopped and August will be dry. And really hot.

Debbie has decided she is a hurricane. The thought here is it will accelerate up to cat 2 around 110 mph if it it is moving over the gulf so slowly.
Even at 95-105 it will do some damage because of the 8-24 inches of rain from Lakeland up thru Valdosta.
The tornados are breaking out in front of the hurricane with warnings everywhere.
By late tomorrow I’ll have some idea where to head to get relief centers up and running. All the goods are stockpiled and loaded. Volunteers are mostly old like me, but willing and earnest.
-
And by like I mean stay safe.
-
Yes be safe! When I lived in Ft Walton Beach I had to evacuate back in the early 80s. Not a lot of fun.
-
I have a buddy who’s vacationing with his family at a beach house in Hilton Head. Oops.
Be well everyone.

So do I! I was talking to him this morning. He went shopping earlier. Full shelves and no people. No one there is worried.

Where hurricanes threaten all the time people don't do the panic buying. I always have lots of bottled water and emergency food on hand, and we have a whole house generator. And since the Great Toilet Paper Shortage of 2020 I also keep tons of toilet paper and paper towels.

I have been outside cleaning up storm debris since about 6:30.
The biggest problem is the tree that thought it should take a nap on our roof. I’ve photographed it and filed the photos with our carrier, cut it off the house, inspected the roof for damage and lugged the pieces into the grove from where it came. By the time I raked the yard, piled all the debris into the wheel barrow and moved the loads into the burn pit, the entire morning was gone.
We are sitting at 10.3” of rain since about 11 last night but it has tapered off to a bunch of aggressive showers of limited duration.
Cedar Key got hammer along with Chiefland and Perry.
Once I get lunch I’m headed out to see where bell is needed.

Wait, what? A tree fell on your house today?!

Yep. Our house backs into a pine grove and the soaking rains for the past couple of weeks combined with the heavy rain and wind last night brought one down. It sounded like it was a slow motion collapse, as the tree tangled with other trees as it dropped. The pines are very tall due to how close they were originally planted and by the time it reached the roof it had expended a lot of its energy.

I'm in the basement.....making cartridges.
Be safe all!

Sounds like the damage could have been a lot worse. Those conditions are exactly what devastated Raleigh in 1996. We had had days of soaking rain making the ground all soggy then Fran veered inland and winds hit and all those trees fell over, because of the loose roots.
I was working at the time with an architect at my job. During the storm he and his wife woke up in the middle of the night and went downstairs, and a big tree fell through the roof into the bedroom and landed across their bed.

Right. That was as fortuitous as Trump turning his head slightly to the right.

I’m am always amazed at the near miss coincidences that spare one life and take another.
My sister was on her way to the World Trade Center the morning of September eleventh but had to stop and pick up pastries for the coffee bar, which delayed her about fifteen minutes.
Her life was spared while thousands of others died instead.
Sometimes God has other plans is how I think of it.

Yes, sometimes it’s God and sometimes it’s our own free will actions and decisions, which actually goes back to God who gave us our personalities.
(I guess I don’t want to get into the whole Calvinistic question of predestination lol.)
I was driving along about 75 mph in a 4 lane (two lanes in each direction), I was in the right lane. No other car moving before or behind me, but up ahead I saw a pickup truck parked on the shoulder. Decision: Just continue on in the right lane or move over into the left lane. Usually a vehicle parked thereabouts means someone is fishing down at the waterway.
I decided to move over. Just as I did, another pickup truck emerged from in front of the parked one, it moved perpendicular to the road, pulled into the right lane going in the opposite direction. The parked truck had blocked both our views of each other. Had I not moved over we would have hit head on. I have no idea why he was going the wrong way, maybe he wanted to go behind the parked truck back down into the marsh.
My personality is very risk averse, it’s my nature to put a stop to any potential catastrophe very early in the process, before some people even perceive a possible threat. I think of my life as having been “lucky”. No really terrible things have happened to me. But is it luck or is it all the little “coincidental” decisions I make?
My family makes fun of me for always anticipating the worst. But we don’t see the alternate reality of what could have happened. This is why I love that cartoon I posted about the guy who went back in a time machine and killed Adolf Hitler. He comes back all excited about the great thing he’s done only for no one to appreciate it because no one’s heard of Hitler, because he stopped that whole catastrophe from ever happening.
We all do this when we make smart decisions very early in a “chain of events” - all of us as pilots are a bit more cognizant of this phenomenon.

On 9-11 I woke up in a hotel room in KBGM watching the news about the towers in New York City. My flight attendant was very worried as his girlfriend worked in the north tower. It was 2 days before he found out she had a dental appointment that morning and was 6 blocks away when the planes hit the towers. He had thought the appointment was on the 12th.

I can’t believe there are adults voting this year who weren’t born on 9/11.

Yep. And no concept of what is about to happen with the open border policy the leftist have created.
-

Exactly. We’ve heard naught about Islamofascist terrorism for several years and are being told instead that Israel are the terrorists.
I asked my brother about the safety of his wife’s family with all the rioting (she’s from the UK) and he said they’re fine, not in the areas the “far right extremists” are rioting. I had been referring to the gangs of Muslims rioting. So apparently he’s getting his news from CNN and I’m getting it from X.
“Far right extremists”? You mean ordinary British who are fed up with criminal violence from the million plus immigrants flooding the island, who finally blew their lid when the son of Rwandan immigrants went postal and knifed a bunch of children killing three of them? To protest the policies of open immigration which the UK has done now for years without the approval of the populous and led to this kind of crime is now “extremism”?
So in the U.S., after being told for decades that Islamic terrorism is an existential threat, justifying endless wars in the Mideast, all of a sudden for the past approximately two presidential terms, we hear no more about it, while the schools and universities have been teaching kids who never existed in the 20th century, that western civilization is the root of all evil, not radical religious extremism. And Muslims are now an idpol protected class; victims that can do no wrong. So in the current presidential term we throw the border wide open and invite them all in, along with whomever else wants to takeover the U.S. from within (the Chinese?)
My how things have flipped upside down. It’s like the oligarchy running things doesn’t actually have a moral position, but uses whatever story is useful in the moment to support its sick agenda: Keeping itself in power.
First the Republicans, then the Democrats. Is there really a difference?

Let's face it: everyone here is the result of chance and/or good decisions by someone else.

Was just at my friend’s Catholic bookstore. He pointed out a Hispanic lady who was quietly browsing, and said she told him she couldn’t sleep the night of July 12 and kept feeling like she should pray for President Trump’s safety. So she spent the rest of the night doing so.
I was once awakened with the urge to pray for my Dad. I did so and went back to sleep. When he and my Mom returned from their trip, she said I’d never guess what had happened. I said, “Was it around 5:00 a.m. on Saturday?” She was stunned. Dad had fallen through the ice while fishing and had been with my 85-year-old great uncle who never could have pulled him out. Dad managed to use his arms and upper body to get out.
God speaks.

Yes! Although I'm very disappointed in God after I did all that praying before the 2020 election. My sister and I did an organized prayer routine for weeks. When Biden "won" my sister said, "Your problem is you were praying for Trump to win. You need to pray for God to do whatever is His will, not for something you want."
Well okay then. That might be too much to ask of me. I'm again praying for Trump to win. But I will be less surprised this time if he "loses".
-

Trump did indeed win. The election however was stolen.

I did the same, but my fervent prayer was that Biden and Harris never see the inside of the White House. I even lit a candle every day for weeks, in front of a picture of DJT and Melania debarking from Marine One. I do understand now that God’s ways are not ours. I trust Him even when I cannot see His plan.

My sister says Biden won because the country needed to experience and understand just how destructive the left is, and Trump’s win in 2024 will be even bigger. She might have a point, Biden’s margin was small even if he did legitimately win. Trump should win in a landslide now after the hellacious past four years. Before Kamala I was more hopeful but now all the pro-Kamala propaganda is working on me. There are just too many stupid people who would vote for her just to get the first woman president.

The Cackler support is all an illusion brought to you by the MSM and Hollywood. Heavily controlled and scripted. All of it.
Watch when she speaks to a crowd. They will never scroll out and show the crowd. Why? Because it’s small.
Expect to see venues with Hollywood types and performers. The crowd will show up for that, not to see the Cackler.
The leftist lunatics delivered a fatal blow to themselves today. Let them continue to destroy themselves.

Maybe a yes answer is more than random chance. Catholics believe in the intercession of St. Anthony. My mother always said to pray to St. Anthony if you’ve lost something. So I always have, if I get desperate enough and can’t find a thing, and I have a near 100% success rate. I can’t even remember a time I didn’t find the thing shortly after I gave up looking and just prayed to St. Anthony. God Himself doesn’t have nearly that good a record.
On the other hand there may be scientific reasons the St. Anthony prayer works. Usually the thing is somewhere in your house and you’ll likely come across it eventually anyway. Possibly, giving up the search and focusing on prayer is a way to free your subconscious mind to supply you with a hint of where you probably left it.
But then you’re left with: What is the “subconscious mind”? We don’t even have the first clue what the conscious mind is, much less the subconscious. Mind is the animating energy that makes our body “alive” I suppose. (If you’re brain dead on life support you’re not really considered alive.) Where does that mind energy come from? And what is it? It seems related to matter (brain tissue) but also pure energy (electrical charges) and it seems intuitive that it, or part of it, survives our physical death, which is I suppose the difference between mind and soul.
And now my husband would say, “You’re overthinking things again.” Subtext: Go do something productive.

Because of the false perception that Catholics are worshiping him? It’s not worship. It’s more like God has delegated tasks. Like, “Anthony, can you please help these idiots find their lost shit? I’ve got better things to do, like making sure Trump gets elected this time, or those crazy humans will self destruct under Harris.”

Anthony may be a lot of things. A saint is NOT one of them… right?
