You mean the FICA tax? Here is my understanding. A CPA can correct me if this is wrong:
The FICA taken out of your paycheck is itself a tax. It’s taken off the top of your earnings (up to a certain limit). So is Medicare and then your pre tax contributions such as 401(k). What remains is your gross income.
That gross income is adjusted with other stuff until it becomes your adjusted gross which is the basis for your income tax calculation. So the answer is, federal income tax is taken after the “SS” deduction but since the FICA is itself a “tax” (unlike say, your 401(k)) because it is involuntary and is not “owned” by you so you aren’t entitled to get it back if you die before qualifying for social security income, and you can’t pass it directly to your heirs, it is a defacto confiscation and so it’s not the same thing as a pre-tax retirement savings, healthcare savings, college savings, etc., where the money remains “yours”. It is instead a collectivist redistribution system where it goes into a collective pot then doled back out according to a formula that does take into consideration how much you contributed, but still, is an involuntary tax.

All I know is that SS tax rate is applied to your gross income, not to income after other taxes are deducted. And if you are self employed you get hit with double the rate.
Edit to add: Rush posted before I did. My only claim to knowledge of the subject is I maintained payroll tax tables for an software payroll system. And was self employed, though as a employee of my own corporation.

Yep, I too am self employed now, and yes, we pay double because we have to pay the employer portion in addition to our own. People forget that your employer pays the same FICA for you that you do, which means, they have already taken it out of the salary or wages they would have offered you in a true free market. You think corporations are eating this tax? No. They are paying you less and/or charging their customers more, which amounts to the same thing, as we are all collectively customers as well as employees in the general economy.

at one time self-employed got to deduct part of the social security taxes they paid (50% iirc) off their gross income.
(can't remember if it was on the 1040 or the Schedule C(?) or some other schedule... it's been a loooong time since I was self-employed)

Yes, it is still partly deductible as a business expense. The best thing that happened to me as a small business owner was the Trump tax cuts! Saved me several thousand.
