Maybe all the airlines do this but this is crazy. So hubby and I are booking tickets and this might be the wrong way to do it but we each have our own AA frequent flyer account right? So we both log into our accounts on separate computers and talk on the phone from two ends of the house, so that we get the same flight and choose seats next to each other.
So we get online and find that the flight we want only has 1 first class seat left. It says $1100. Mark says go ahead and try to “book” it and see what happens, because he just did. So I did and got an error message “that seat is no longer available at that price.” Okay I started all over again. Now all of a sudden there are three first class seats available at $1300. So I go ahead and take one.
WTF?? Why do they make it sound like first class is almost full, and then bump the price up? Scared me to death at first, like one of us would have to fly economy. We complete the purchases coordinating our seats so we’re sitting together and the total price difference ends up being $200.
And maybe we are stupid not to book them together under one login. If Mark bought “two” does that mean I wouldn’t get my FF miles because I didn’t buy the ticket on my login?
And worse, would the TSA precheck number not populate and my husband if he was being an idiot would click on without putting my KTN (or whatever they call it) in the empty box before closing the deal? That was the biggest reason I wanted to do it separately.
I guess I’m old. I think first class tickets should be X amount period end of story. You can change it tomorrow if you want but what’s with telling me you only have 1 seat left, and then, oh wait, we do have more seats! But HA HA we jacked the price up. That pisses me off.

Everything is dynamically priced these days. Computers and communications tech make it easy.

I book for me and the family all the time. Me, wife, son, daughter.
All of their FF profiles and KTN information are in my login.
All of the info goes into the reservation.
Another thing, I book economy and I get an email a few days later with 'upgrade' options. The upgrade options are the same price as if I booked First Class on the original booking. A few days later, I get another email with a discount (generally 30-50% less). Sometimes I take the offer, sometimes I do not... depending on the length of the flights.
We only travel domestic, so I do not know if this works internationally.

I haven't flown commercial for a while, but as far as I remember, I log into my DELTA account and book two seats. It then asks who will be the other passenger and allows me to enter their FF number and her points go into her account.
I'm not sure how Delta would handle your seating question though.

Thanks for the replies. Next time I think we need to see if one of us can enter all the info for both pax. The pricing issue is just what comes with technology allowing fast response to market demand which is VERY ANNOYING.

I will also add that I use a VPN to hide while looking at prices. I did not do that before and the cost of each ticket increased $100-$200 if I did multiple searches before buying.
It now looks like I am in Chicago or Denver or LA before I actually buy. My IP is in Ft Worth when not using the VPN.
We generally buy 1-2 weeks out, so I pay a premium for buying late. I know this but we get 2 vacations a year and we want the weather to be as good as possible.

At one point I thought I determined that the lowest price was about 6 weeks out. I have no idea if that’s true.
