Ah, thanks. I’ve met him and found him likable in person. Can’t diagnose but if I had to guess maybe bipolar, or what we used to call manic-depressive which is a far more illustrative name (I don’t know why they have to screw everything up by renaming things).
I’ve known manic-depressives, it’s very apt. The manic phase might fit his alleged exploits, whether real or just his imagination. They will do, or attempt to do, the most outrageous things, and the depressive phase can definitely be suicidal.

At first I thought this was a necro-post because it made the rounds of the other pilot forums months ago.
I met him several times. I agree with Rush that he was very likable in person.
But he had very little patience for idiots (ie, people that disagreed with him).
Personally, I think he was practically as smart as he thought he was, hence, there were a lot of relative idiots for him to want to get away from. And he found a permanent way to do that.

His 310 was hangared at our airport. I flew him to Greenville, SC for lunch one time. I had lunch with him at our airport the day before he landed gear up at Appleton before AirVenture. He was cleaning the airplane and waxing it. It was brutally hot and he had just gotten in from overseas. At lunch, he said he needed to get insurance. I gave him our insurance brokers name and he called them up and got set up.

I was visiting some relatives in North Atlanta quite a few years ago and Henning let me use his hangar at LZU for a few days while he was out of town.

I never met him. Just heard of him on POA a long time ago.
He was a forward thinking guy. He left POA.
I do not know if he was lib or not, he was just tired of their BS.

IIRC he was way out on the progressive side of the world. Angry as hell, but would spend hours talking about a subject if you were interested. Quite a character. He will be missed, if for no other reason than that he always had a really different take on things.

I think his banning was more about his rough manner (nobody I know has a rough exterior). Benning could eat you alive and never held back. The pussies at POA could never stand to be upbraided. It just isn’t done.
