Some here may be interested in this new protocol for social media. No central servers and so no moderators or censors.

Is that like built on blockchain or something?
-
It is similar to Bitcoin in its use of decentralized relays, rather than central servers, and public key cryptography to establish an identity and sign messages. However there is no blockchain per se. So each relay is free to establish its own policies.
I think it has significant potential due to lack of a central point of attack - similar to what has made Bitcoin so successful.
Presently a lot of people there are crypto enthusiasts, but one can use it for what ever subjects are of interest. For example, people could post notes there with hashtags #pilotspin and #spinzone to essentially create a similar environment. (Though I do know that people here tend to like the current PilotSpin for their political discussions!)

I’m going to have to figure out how it works.

Cool. There is quite a bit of good technical information and some introductions. I am still working on figuring it out.
Send your npub when you have one.

My first thought was "is this a rehash or update of Usenet NNTP? A quick search shows others have asked the same thing. Usenet news isn't centralized either - just a loose confederation of cooperating servers. Of course the Usenet NNTP protocol was rather technically limited. And the distributed nature and multiplicity of independently developed clients made it very difficult to extend the protocol.
I suspect a lot of people left Usenet because they couldn't figure out how to ignore trolls. Or they wanted someone else to filter messages for them (i.e. moderators) and left for moderated web forums (which were also flashier and easy to use.)

I loved usenet and used it for a very long time. The structure for groups and subgroups was very useful. But I thought it shut down years ago.
Edit: Now I remember that Netscape stopped supporting usenet and email.

It is true that the limited moderation on this forum, I like very much. The spambots are pretty much it, but that’s a lot.

I think this will only work well in the long run in there are relays and projects to do the filtering which most people want.
There is a project called wine already working on this. The important thing will be if there is a diversity of such providers so no one choke point.

As much as I hate moderators, my biggest concern is censors. Government.
