Any of you affected? Everyone okay?
I have a brother in SC been without power over 24 hours, says a half million are out. Trees down everywhere. Our old home in NC mountains hit hard with flooding, downed trees, most of our old stomping grounds out of power.
-
It went east of us, we got some wind, not heavy, and less than 2" of rain.
Asheville has been cut off although I-40 west is open now. I-40 east was washed out. Maggie Valley, NC has been wiped out. Lots of issues in TN.

I heard about I-40. That was my lonely drive taking the last car down to Texas, took that I-40 across the NC/TN state line in a snowstorm, was serious IMC. But just a car so…

If it weren't for The Weather Channel, I would have thought it was a day of MVFR.
We got a little rain, but we could have used more.
The cloud cover and the gentle breezes were a nice relief from the heat.

Here's an idea of what it is like up in the mountains...

I have a FB friend, she was the secretary at our EAA chapter for a bit. She and her sons live in Asheville. She was posting yesterday about so many people carrying on about their college football team when so many people are suffering. Funny thing is, I don't remember her worrying much about other areas of the country when they were hit with hurricanes or tornadoes.

$10 will get you $20 that she is a liberal democrat.

Here's our old county, the most northwestern one in NC, right next to TN on the west VA on the north. It's an electric co-op. The grey does NOT mean the power isn't out, that's Duke Energy a different company.

Asheville is La La Land.

Another natural disaster and I haven’t seen a single left organization lifting a finger to help.
There have been several whose spokespeople are shingling that the governor isn’t doing enough, of course.
The pussy left is an embarrassment to mankind.

That’s Asheville. I felt really sorry for them until I read this statement from one of the residents:
“This blows my mind, and I’m really worried about friends, neighbors and businesses down here by the river,” a man told NBC News, while partly blaming climate change for the destruction. “It’s just a reminder to me that climate change is going to affect all of us. No one is safe from the impacts of climate change and we really need to take action now.”
“We really need to take action now” no doubt means vote for Kamala Harris and all her commie anti-energy, anti-American, pro-open border policies.

Maybe. There is a river that flows through Asheville and I’m sure it’s overflowing but I don’t know if that particular footage is the river or other areas of the town.

It's the French Broad River. We were in Asheville (along with many of her family members) for my wife's and her brother's birthday in early August and we all got a kick out of the name. The guys kept saying they wanted to go see the French Broad. The women just asked if French Broads are better than American Broads, and suggested that if we thought so, we were welcome to move there.

The Weather Channel (NBC/Comcast) harps on it as does all the other networks. What a freaking joke. Weather happens. These are control freak Fascists.

It was the legs, not the pits that got me (when I was single, a LONG TIME AGO).

I have a FB Friend that has a short trip planned up in that general area. a little NW of Asheville. She's been posting constantly wondering if they can get to this lodge they reservations for. With all that is going on there, I believe I would just cancel and not muck things up while people are still trying to recover. Byt that's me.

She probably needs to cancel. The Grove Park Inn says on its Facebook page do not try to come. Although I’m not sure where she was planning to go, it doesn’t look like “a little NW of Asheville” is going to be good.

Here is the Duke Energy outage map. That Lodge is right where the red dot is. And in the satellite view the lodge is visible within the outage area, however Duke's outage map is terrible. No street by street or line by line, just those big blobs. So maybe it's not accurate. Also they might have a generator. But the issues of blocked roads, shortage of goods or water or fuel for generators, all might be problems.
There might be tension between "Stay the hell away, you'll just muck things up here," and "Come on! We have power and we need your money!" The Inn may want them to come, if they have power and supplies. But the county emergency management teams and linemen and cleanup crews might want them to stay away.
Has she tried calling them?

NC advising people to stay the fk out of the area. So there’s that. Neighbor’s 80 something yo dad stranded just north of Ashville without power, cell service etc.

Yeah. I texted my old neighbor asking if they're okay and not gotten an answer yet, it's been a couple days. They haven't posted on FaceBook either, so I'm guessing power and cell service are out.
Meanwhile in SC my brother has partial power. Apparently one of the phases is out, so they have 120 but not 240, and even with the 120 only every other circuit works. Not sure I understand that but that's what he said.
-
I look at the damage video and see all the people out of work and know we have a federal branch so broken that the fucking pedophile in charge is too demented to even realize it’s an issue.
-
Yep, officially being told to stay away. This is devastating as it’s the biggest money making time of year.

All roads in Western NC should be considered closed to all non-emergency travel.
It looks like your friend should cancel. If the Lodge hasn’t already canceled it for her.

Houses in the US are often wired to have one half of the circuits on one phase of the 240 coming into the house and the other half on the other phase. This normally corresponds to the left and right sides of the bus bars in the master panel.

Most houses have 120/240 service. It is not phases as the primary of the transformer is a single phase. The transformer has two windings with each secondary winding producing 120 volts when measured to ground. When measured across the two 120 volts lines you get the 240 volts. Your house is wired to split the circuits across the two 120 lines to manage the load. Appliances the require 240 volts have circuit breakers that contact both incoming 120 lines. They've lost one 120 leg from the transformer so only some of their outlets work and anything using a 240 outlet, oven, clothes drier AC compressors, should not even be tried.

It is a misnomer to call them phases in a normal 120/240 house set up. If one looks at the transformer they will see that only on of the three phases on the primary is attached on the primary side of the transformer. If they were indeed phases you could not get 240 from the two 120 legs combined as the phase difference would never have the AC peak at the same time.
-
Best schematic I could find of a single phase transformer. In Illinois the primary side is generally 13kv with the secondary windings providing the two 120volt legs into the house.
-
BTW, the primary means of communications in the Asheville area currently is via Starlink.

She had already called them and were told they were on generator but no phone or internet but to come on. In other words, or your words, we want your money please don't cancel.
It’s possible she called before they knew the extent of the road damage. On the other hand NCDOT might be exaggerating a little bit to be on the safe side. If someone comes around a corner and slams into a boulder on the highway they’d be criticized for not telling everyone to stay out. On the other hand, tourism is these people’s biggest industry and fall leaves is the biggest attraction and this is going to really hurt a lot of small businesses revenue for the year and damage the whole economy of the area. Let the people be agile and get back on their feet as fast as possible. On the other hand, people coming up there with no phone or internet will then create hazards when a medical emergency happens and they need to communicate.
Disasters create tension. Like you evacuate for a hurricane and then authorities don’t let you return to your home which then gets looted or suffers more damage because you can’t take care of things. But then people return to disaster areas only to get themselves into a dangerous situation and need to be rescued which puts more strain on the responders, etc. etc.

I am a mechanical engineer and not exactly dumb. But I have never been able to grasp electrical stuff. Even after the requisite EE 101 course. It makes absolutely no sense to me, I can’t wrap my head around it. The only way I can grasp a smidge of understanding is to make a mechanical analogy like water pressure, flow etc. in pipes.
Even then it falls woefully short of enlightenment. All the electrons made at power plants go NOWHERE. Energy is actually not transmitted through the wires, but through the electromagnetic field in the empty air around them!
It’s magic.
-
In the example of actual phased voltages if I take any two phases and combine them the combined voltage is sin 120 * the combined single phase numbers. i.e. 120+120 = 240*(sin120)= 208, So the 208 isn't some number pulled out of the air there is actual math to back it up.
-

um, I'm pretty sure electrons move. And the electrons don't get "made at power plants"... unless you have some really exotic power plants down there in Texas.
(and one more thing, air is an awesome electrical insulator - until the voltages get really high... think lightening)
-
The way I've always thought about it (which may be wrong) is that DC means the electrons move from one end of the wire to the other. AC the electrons are just shoved back and forth but don't really go anywhere.

And just as the administration has given away yet another aid package to the Ukraine clusterfuck, the administration is now imploring Americans to donate to aid the Hurricane relief.
Just imagine what that $2.4B would do to help Americans right now.
Hell, just imagine what the $175B we've sunk into that clusterfuck would do for our own country.

I live at an airpark just across the N.C. line in Tennessee. It is a mess here, but NOTHING close to what Western N.C. got.
I didn't even realize that we are completely bound by the mountains and the Nolichucky River. The storm took out (temporarily) every single bridge that lets us get in or out. Fortunately, they have managed to get two back open. My 15 minute drive into town is now 45, but at least I can get in/out.
We lost water, internet and power. Thank goodness I put in a whole house generator after the Texas ice storm (right before we moved up here). We got power and internet back late yesterday afternoon. An amazing effort by the line crews considering how much infrastructure was gone.
Not sure what the ETA is on water, but I'm sure I'm not smelling the best, and really want a shower....
Overall we are extremely fortunate. No property damage to speak of, and just an inconvenience. I'm really afraid the death toll is going to climb a bunch. Our local community facebook page is full of posts looking for missing family member :(. Houses gone, destroyed, etc.
The bridge down the street that was destroyed had water at the top when it went. It is normally about 60-70 feet above the water level. I would have never believed it was possible to crest that brige. I've been through a lot of huricanes in Texas, but never seen anything even close to this.

They move but not all the way down wires. They jiggle back and forth in place or something. I think. I should have said electrical charges made at power plants.
-
The way I've always thought about it (which may be wrong) is that DC means the electrons move from one end of the wire to the other. AC the electrons are just shoved back and forth but don't really go anywhere.
You’re right about AC. But I thought DC was similar with the electrons passing the message to the adjoining electrons rather than traveling down the wire.
-

The valence shell of an atom not being filled with electrons is what makes a good conductor. The electrical pressure causes electrons to be bounced from one atom to the next thus creating current flow. The less electrons in that valence shell the better the conductor. Full valence shells make for good insulators.

In the 90's, a friend (an architect) moved to the Charlotte NC area after the area took massive damage from a hurricane (can't remember which one). One reason for the move was the work opportunities presented by the businesses and organizations that needed to rebuild.

Fran. ‘96. That was the one that gave me hurricane PTSD. No power or water for a week, no generator, hubby working 12 hour shifts with the power company, parents couldn’t take us in (they had water but no power or food), kids were little, I had to take them on my own and leave, just drove until I found a motel with power and vacancies. No one was prepared that far inland.
Live and learn. We have had a generator and emergency food and water ever since.
-
People around us laughed at me when the steel hurricane shutters went up two days before Helene because the track was so vague. That and our whole house generator make the storms tolerable and cut way down on my stress levels.
When the storm hit was confirmed people came over and asked who to call to order shutters. We take in older folks who live in mobile homes whenever a storm is coming. I’m out on relief efforts as soon as the hard wind lets up and my wife has all these older folks helping in the kitchen. It’s usually a two, or three day
party.
-
Best charities to fund relief?
Samaritan's Purse, is it legit? And by legit, I mean is the bulk of donations distributed?

The first bad hurricane that hit here since we moved into this neighborhood, we were the only house on our street with a generator. Power was out several days and our loud generator was going GRRRRRRRRRRRR all the time, you heard it all day and night. After it was over, all the neighbors installed generators. Now when the power is out you hear GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR all up and down the street.
Hearing our generator constantly reminding them we had hot water and microwave and stove and washer/dryer etc. etc. while they suffered was too much. A whole house generator is so worth it.
-
Not a hurricane but an ice storm. Took out power all around for a week. But we had a whole house generator. People forget that although you may have gas, you still need electricity to move the air around. The generator worked perfectly. But we kept our lights down low... everyone else dark but we were lit. We did invite our neighbors in for a hot meal and some TV, phone charging and Internet. Above-ground power lines really attract the ice, and if not them then trees overloaded and falling.

There is a relief ministry in Indiana I really respect. I.D.E.S. They have volunteer crews out from Florida to NC and Tenn. right now and have since the storm pulled out.
Samaritan’s purse is a huge relief organization and they don’t siphon off half the money like the Red Cross.
-
-
I always donated to Salvation Army but when they went woke I stopped. Still get snail mail asking for donation. First few after they went woke I wrote “Go Woke Go Broke” on the envelop and returned it.
I definitely don’t donate to the Red Cross.
-
I donate blood as often as I can. But our donation money goes to animal charities and shelters.
-
I think Samaritan's Purse is a good on. That's Franklin Grahams charity group. I know Greta VanSueren like shim.

Still don’t get it. At the end it said houses each get one phase but at the beginning it said one phase makes your lightbulb flicker. So that’s not good so you add two more then it seems more steady. But then it said it flickers so fast (sixty times a second) that you don’t notice it.

I never understood it either until I took general physics. Being able to divide the problem into particles with charges and electric fields and forces made it clearer.
All the analogies about flow of water etc only confused me when I was younger.

Yes that is a good way to look at it. I’ve been married and content for so long that I don’t remember whether I used to find new women attractive just because they were new. Does that make me an old fuddy-dud?

That made me think of an old saying:
Men marry a woman hoping she will never change.
Women marry men hoping to change him.
The problem is that women do change as they get older but men don't. (I'm not talking about looks).
I think when men look at other attractive women they are seeing in the other women the same things that their woman used to be.
That being said, I just enjoy looking at attractive women in skimpy clothing. But I believe in "look but don't touch".

I completed the saying as I knew it but you did say that in your next sentence. My husband and I joke about this because it is largely true. Maybe not totally. I have been able to beat one or two bad habits out of him, but not most of them. He’s 99% exactly like he was when we married and I’m not talking about looks either.
As for me, I guess you’d have to ask him but he has made the comment that before he gave me the diamond engagement ring I worked on his car’s engine and as soon as I had that ring in my possession I threw down the wrench and never picked it up again.
He also has commented that I became “less adventurous” like one of the things that attracted me to him was that I had skydived but then I changed and no longer wanted to do risky things. In my defense this was after we had children, and women become VERY risk averse when they have young children, it is hard wired into our DNA. Or at least in mine.
I did all kinds of risky and outright stupid stuff when I was in my teens and early twenties. Men do too maybe even worse but men continue to do risky stuff throughout life, and thank God they do, otherwise we’d never have made it to the moon, or have advanced civilization of any sort.

I don't think so. Not any more anyway.
Forty or Fifty years ago I always had women checking me out. They don't do that any more.
Something about women must have changed.
