I've been noticing more and more instances of people pressing the crosswalk signal button when there is no traffic that would conflict with crossing the street.
Are these people unable to cross the street without a crosswalk signal?
Do they need mommy to hold their hands?

What are the local laws?
In South Dakota it is a petty offense for a pedestrian to cross against the don't walk signal:

Good question. Like when you are at a red light in the middle of the night in the middle of nowhere and there are no vehicles anywhere in sight. You're still supposed to just sit there til it turns green.

Set the example for the kid. He also likes hitting the button.

In taxachusetts, interestingly, wandering across a street outside of a crosswalk is not against any rules. Crossing contrary to the walk signals can be fined. The fine used to be $1 for the first offense. But if you want to avoid the risk of getting fined $1, cross the street somewhere other than the crosswalk with the signal.
hmmmm
of course, I might be misreading the rules... nah, that couldn't happen.
But one rule I do know for certain: don't hit a pedestrian.

I love the ones that as soon as you step off the curb it starts counting down.

It's nice to know how much time is left.
