But, but, but . . . the government is responsible for protecting us from everything, including ourselves, aren't they? We can't be allowing people to take risks and be self sufficient from the government can we? What king of undisciplined people are we raising these days! Sheesh!
[/sarcasm]
Whatever a Gaggle-Fock is, I think this qualifies!

NO ONE owns property in this country. You only have a revocable land grant to use it as our betters arbitrarily see fit. Death is the penalty if you resist.
Freedom is an illusion.
-
The greatest threat to the federal government is people who discover they are self-sufficient and don't NEED their white masters to tell them what to do, provide for their every allowable need, and take whatever they want in return.

But, but,
The President, the Attorney General, the mayor of my hometown, my city and county councilmen and the Chief of Police in my city are all black. Where is this "white" master residing?
Oh, but the guy in the video was white. Did you watch it?

I was referring to the white house where all the idiotic executive orders are born. As for city councils, mayors, and chief of police, at the end of the train you find the executive branch enabling the behavior.

Only government 'tit' we are hooked up to is electricity. (well, I guess you can add the two cell phones). If the PUD's electricity wasn't so stinking cheap (less than 3 cents per Kw/h), I would look at alternative sources.

Well, and the property, real estate, income, and sales taxes, etc we have to pay. We don't own our property as we have to pay taxes on it (government rent).

The government isn't getting any money from him so therefore he cannot live there. If I were him or his attorney, I'd find other "trailers" within the city (or county) limits that aren't supposed to be there and then show that as evidence in the case. My guess is that he will find others and that nothing has been said to them because they have public utilities hooked up and are paying for them. I'd also like to know how the city found out about his property. Something like this seems like someone would have had to have filed a complaint. Perhaps the "trailer" was an eye sore to his neighbors and they complained?

I have said it before, Only those that can defend their turf from ANY outside attacker are truly free. That is none of us here.

Years and years ago a dear friend said that there are three kinds of people in the world.
Those who say, "What's mine is mine and you can't have it."
Those who say, "What's yours is yours only so long as you can defend it."
And those who say, "What's yours is yours until I take it."

My wife always says what's mine is hers and what's hers is hers.

I watched the video, and this is a tough one, I'd love to hear the city's side of the story, I'm willing to bet it's a little more than "you aren't hooked up to the utilities so you're not safe". Unlike living in NYC or San Fran, where apparently it is ok to drop trou and drop a load anywhere you feel like it, there are usually codes of waste disposal, drinkable water and building codes. Most of these rules are there for safety and unfortunately this guy should conform to them, especially the septic codes. He should be cut slack for no utilities. The rainwater collection for drinking water? Probably not the best idea if there is potable water nearby. I don't know, I'm torn on this one.

I'd like to hear the city's side as well. If he has a septic tank and it complies with the codes and regulations, I don't see the problem (I don't know what he has or what is being complied with or isn't being complied with). Who cares if he wants to collect rain water and purify it himself vs. using city water? The broader point is that he shouldn't need permission from the government to live his life as he chooses. He's on his land (we can debate land ownership in another thread) and not harming anyone else. His girlfriend is choosing to live there with him exercising her rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness as well.
That being said, we don't know the city's side so this is all purely speculation. I'm disheartened by the overwhelming change in attitude that we must ask for permission from the government to do things vs. having the government ask us for permission.

I agree with you. Some of this stuff is necessary, dumping septic in a hole out back isn't a good idea and is a matter of public safety. Capturing rain water, who cares. Building codes? Those are probably important and may be the point of contention here. I suppose the other issue is if the guy keeps it up, I've seen some real shit shows with people, basically hoarders, taking down a neighborhood. From the video, the guy seemed like he wouldn't be a bad neighbor. Like I said, tough call.

Apparently he lost his court fight, the issue seems to be that he put a trailer on the property which is not allowed by ordinance. The neighbor, the absentee neighbor, whose house is run down complained. Sounds like Tyler, the trailer owner, just plopped the trailer on the property without seeing what is legal. He should probably have bought property somewhere that doesn't have so many rules. The funny thing is most of the neighbors seem to like him as the area he was in was a hangout for druggies and prostitutes before he moved in with his dogs.

It sounds like he needs to try and have the city ordinance changed. The ordinance seems silly to me, but I don't live there and am not familiar with the local issues. Alternatively, he can move the trailer and have something else put in there instead, like a mini house or something.
