TLDR or watch: Man with too much money, a history of alcohol abuse, parole violations, on two psychoactive drugs, denied a medical, has only a student certificate, fired by his CFI, just a few hours logged, buys a complex high performance craft and flies VFR into a storm cell.
Spiraling down from 17k? I don't think the following is entirely true: "Impact with the ground at high speed caused their deaths." HE was probably dead from being shot by his wife with her conceal carry pistol well before they hit the ground.
However, she was as stupid as he was just for getting into the airplane with him, unless he lied to her about not having a medical or a proper license and ratings. Or maybe his multiple DUIs and parole violations should have clued her in, unless he hid those from her too.
Even if all that, why didn't she figure out he had a dangerous personality in the first place, before she ever married him? I just don't understand some women.

At first I thought you had seen the POA thread about one of the POA guys exercising his PIC authority...
In any case, people think they are "in love"... and that can completely overwhelm rational thought*... Your referenced "accident" is just one of the more extreme examples.
*of course, that presumes the person is capable of rational thought.

No I missed that POA thread. I hardly ever go over there anymore. I don’t like having to constantly self-censor because my every thought is being scrutinized for wrong-think.

They’re out there. I’ve had students like that. When I found out what they were doing (without my concurrence) I’d drop them, one or two I wrote a letter to the FSDO ( before the Internet). Some just when talking to them you knew they’d be a problem. One even told me I had to fly with him after I declined to instruct him.
