Supposedly Elon is planning a Mars landing and with Trump in charge possibly maybe plans could be made? But the U.S. is in such debt I’m not sure it’s going to happen. Not even sure I want it to.

I do. I think we need to spend money on something that shows that we as a nation can do the very hard things. I can SEE how the money is being spent. Sure, we can spend money on feeding the homeless and the war on drugs and the war on poverty and the war on whatever. Or sending billions overseas and never seeing anything come of it. Except more people hating America.
Seeing the SpaceX rocket towering over Apollo Saturn V is awe inspiring. Watching boosters land themselves and being ready for reuse in short order. THAT I can see. Sending humans to Mars and returning them safely to Earth. Now that's something I'd be happy to spend money on. Sure, we may never get something as good as Tang or Space Food Sticks out of it. But seeing Americans plant the flag of the United States of America on another planet. National Pride is the only pride I care to celebrate. Yeah, that's a reason to get up in the morning.

I was thinking a little more about this. Male animals attract mates by showing that they have enough excess energy to go about life and also develop huge horns, great manes, spectacular plumage. No female animal would respect or want to mate with a male with a shitty coat. That's how species maintain their strength and improve over time.
We as Americans can show the world that we have enough excess power to do all the things we need to do PLUS go to Mars. We are AMERICANS dammit. We ARE the best. Let's show the world what we know is true.
