Blowing up the internet, and the left is hopeful it will cause a MAGA civil war. Andrew Torba of Gab has this to say, and I agree wholeheartedly. There are such things as eternal verities, and essentials for human flourishing.
“The debate surrounding H-1B visas and legal immigration has ignited a fiery discourse online this week, exposing a chasm that exists between two fundamentally different worldviews and value systems. The recently-turned-MAGA-five-minutes-ago corner of the Silicon Valley elite, men who champion the post-Enlightenment mindset that views nations as mere "corporations" or "sports teams," find themselves at odds with a growing movement of American citizens that yearns for a deeper, more meaningful connection to their people, place, and God.
We are told by Elon Musk his band of Silicon Valley foreigner friends that America must import more foreigners, "legally" of course, in order to win! "Winning" is not defined outside of making shareholder value go up and increasing the GDP or something. If your home is destroyed and turned into a third-world slum in the process of "winning," well that's just the cost of doing business. If you can't afford to buy a home or start a family while foreigners live like kings when they return home and arbitrage our currency for their own, well that's just a downside of "progress."
These guys have been getting dragged in the comment sections for days on this topic by the American people who are sick and tired of being cast aside for foreign labor in our own country. In response, Elon and his friends have alluded to Americans being "lazy" "unskilled" and even "retarded." After substantial pushback in the comment sections all over his own platform, Elon announced that the algorithm on X would be changing to combat this rising tide of dissent. X also started removing verification badges and locking out accounts that have been pushing back on the call for more "legal" replacement of our people. This has caused a flood of X users to join the Gab community in recent days and we welcome them with open arms to experience both freedom of speech and freedom of reach that our platform has to offer.
The Silicon Valley elite, blinded by their own intellectual arrogance and disconnected from the spiritual needs of the people, have proposed immigration policies that prioritize economic efficiency and their shareholder's interests over the well-being of Americans and the integrity of our communities and culture. Their callous approach to immigration is a direct consequence of the spiritual vacancy that characterizes their post-Enlightenment worldview, which elevates materialism above all else.
These people have lost touch with the fundamental human need for belonging, purpose, and a sense of place. They have forgotten that mass legal migration, just as much as mass illegal migration, is not merely an economic transaction but a deeply personal and spiritual transaction that involves the uprooting of communities, the loss of cultural identity, and the undermining of American citizens.
The H-1B visa program, designed to facilitate the temporary employment of foreign workers in specialty occupations, has become a lightning rod for this clash of worlds and values. Proponents argue that it is essential for driving innovation, maintaining a competitive edge in the global marketplace, and filling skills gaps in the American workforce. Detractors, meanwhile, assert that the program undermines American workers, erodes the fabric of our communities, and prioritizes economic efficiency over the spiritual and cultural well-being of our nation. The reality about the H-1B is that is provides corporations with what are essentially indentured servants who work double the hours for half the cost and literally cannot quit or change jobs or they will be sent back home. How can Americans compete with that? They can't, by design.
This debate is not merely a disagreement over policy, but a manifestation of the chasm that exists between those who have embraced the secular, materialistic worldview of the Enlightenment and those who yearn for a deeper, more meaningful connection to their people, place, and God. The Silicon Valley Sultans, who joined us only after it was evident that President Trump was going to win and it was extremely safe to do so, cannot be allowed to dictate the policy of the movement they joined five minutes ago. We don't care how much money they donated; this movement is not the private sector, and they must understand that they work for and answer to the American people first and foremost, not their corporation's shareholders.
These people have lost touch with the toil that goes into creating something real, something that will last, like our nation. They are unrooted from the soil and thus have no care for its fundamental destruction so long as they can profit from it. Corporations, websites, apps, and games come and go. Society is not built upon pixels; it is built upon the labor, love, and blood of hardworking men and women who pour their hearts into creating and building something real.
Let us not be blinded by their illusions. Let us instead turn our attention to the things that will outlast any pixel or algorithm. Let us build a better future, brick by brick, with our own two hands and with our own exceptional people. The potential for American greatness has never been higher and we do not need to look to talent pools in foreign nations in order to unlock that potential.
We must focus on constructing American manufacturing infrastructure, building hospitals that heal, homes that house, and upgrading our transportation systems to the 21st century. These are the things that will outlast any corporation, pixel, or algorithm and form the foundation of a truly great nation for decades to come.
The immigration debate is a reflection of the profound spiritual rot that permeates the post-Enlightenment mind of our so-called elites and, by extension, the broader society. We must return to the tangible and to the spiritual, to the things that truly matter. Let us not be blinded by the allure of economic efficiency and political expediency. Instead, let us turn our attention to the things and the people who will form the foundation of a truly great nation.
We must build a better future, brick by brick, with our own two hands and with our own exceptional people. The time has come for us to stand up and demand that our elected officials prioritize the well-being of Americans and the integrity of our communities and culture over the interests of multinational corporations and their shareholders. We will not stand by idly and watch the continued erosion of our country and undermining of our people in the name of the "winning" an increased GDP and shareholder value.
Our country is not a sports team. It is not a corporation. It is not an economic zone.
It is our home.”
To God be the glory,
Andrew Torba

Well we’re going to have to work this out because the last thing we should do is weaken MAGA with in-fighting. It took less than two months to go from “Elon is a hero! If not for him buying Twitter, Trump might not have won!” To: “Oh noes! Elon’s going to import a bunch of Indians! Bad Elon!”
I’m not saying it isn’t a problem. It is. But it’s very nuanced with many variables not easily managed. It’s all well and good to say we need to go back to everything being made in America by Americans and we all need to be in spiritually connected communities. I agree it should happen, and the lack of it is driving our downfall, along with other things. But wishing it won’t make it so.
The disparity is driven by economic differences and the exchange rate. American workers can’t compete on a level playing field with someone fresh from a shithole country. But you can’t blame a corporation for trying to maximize profit. That’s good for our investment portfolios. Unless that’s just a big ponzi scheme. Economic growth works along with population growth. And there is a very big problem of Americans not replacing ourselves.
On the other hand I totally agree that I don’t want American culture replaced with any other. Immigrants must assimilate.

Just because there are differing ideas? Do we want to have discussions or just have everyone walk some party line?

No, my comments are towards the squishy republicans that are being played by the leftist. This is not a huge issue, with both sides having valid points. But the leftist will use it against them, and they will cower in the corner.

The fucking turtle will lead the rino calvary including collins, cornyn, and murkowski in torpedoing the will of the people.

THIS. This is what I was trying to say. There are far more urgent issues to be addressed and we can’t let ourselves be turned against each other or against the Trump/Elon/Ramaswamy/RFK team before we even get started here. And it didn’t even occur to me that the left could be throwing fuel on the fire but of course they are.
There is a lot Trump’s team is doing I don’t agree with. For example RFK wanting to ban food dyes. I’m not at all convinced they’re poisoning us. I think 95% of the problem with our food is just we eat too much of it. But do I want the feds regulating how much food is on the plate when I go to a restaurant? Of course not.
None of these people are conservatives or even classic liberals and we shouldn’t be surprised they’re not entirely acting like it. Most of them have been erstwhile Democrats for Pete’s sake. But right now they're a thousand times better than the corrupt cabal in the White House.
I’m going to be unhappy with some stuff, maybe a lot of stuff, they do but if they deliver on the basics as promised I’ll be satisfied.
*Negotiate an end to Ukraine/Russia.
*Get our hostages back from Gaza and get the MidEast trade route secure again (one thing contributing to inflation is a lot of our shit has to go around the Horn of Africa)
*Extend the Trump tax cuts, maybe pass more tax cuts and reduce regulations
*Close the border and deport illegals, starting with criminals and gangs
*Drill baby drill, become a net oil/gas exporter again and fill up our strategic oil reserves
*Implement DOGE and start slashing federal agencies, investigate corruption in FBI/DOJ/CIA/NSA
*Get woke out of the military and make the military great again
If we are doing most of the above, I’m fine with Elon importing a few high IQ legal Indian immigrants if that’s what he wants. Am I on board with his whole colonize Mars thing? No. It seems Elon can do space better than NASA but unless space adventures contribute to our military defense I’m not sure I want my tax dollars going to it.
I am also consciously aware of the danger of the new powers (MAGA and Trump’s team) becoming corrupt themselves and we end up back where we started. These people are not perfect saviors. Whatever they put into place, will not be immune to the same tendencies for all governments to metastasize and move toward totalitarianism. The fight is NEVER over.

I know that is my problem. 95% of what I eat is very healthy. I just eat too much of it.

I am all for his Mars project, especially since it is not directly funded by tax dollars. If we don't lead in space, we will surely be lead on Earth.

YES. We’ve been eating keto for a while and the theory was we’d lose weight, but just eliminating carbs isn’t enough. You still have to reduce calories and since protein and fat are more calorie dense, you can’t just replace carbs with protein and fat, gram for gram. You have to reduce the amount. Like only 3 oz of protein but we eat like an 8 oz steak.
Plus I’ve been cheating like hell with chocolate and stuff. 🫤

If it remains completely privately funded I agree, he can do what he wants. But I’m betting it will end up subsidized by the feds if it isn’t already (as you say, indirectly, I believe NASA has at least provided technical help).
Elon has the idea it will be an independent colony and supposedly there is international agreement that space belongs to everybody and nobody can claim it, just like international waters. But I don’t buy that for one second. Planets (and their satellites like the Moon) are like islands in the ocean and islands certainly are claimed territory by whomever takes them by force or purchases them, and in my opinion there is no way in hell extraterrestrial bodies won’t end up being treated the same way. Elon himself is violating this “international agreement” by saying it will be self ruled, which means its being claimed. Which means governments on earth will eye it with envy and Machiavellian plots.
The whole thing is nucking futs.

at least at one time, part of the NASA mission was that NASA technology had to be made available to the public... ya know, for the betterment of all Mankind.

By "indirectly" I was primarily thinking that the government (military and NASA itself) would be paying SpaceX for their services. So the people (tax payers) will still be paying for much of it. But since a private business will be doing the work it will hopefully be more efficient than a government agency.

Right. There is no way I can believe that the government won’t get involved in utilizing Elon’s technology and you are exactly right that he does it because it’s a private business, and he himself is extremely competent at running his companies.

I found my weight plateaued at 225. I cut my caloric intake to between 1000-1500 calories. I eat as few carbs as I can. Currently down to 197. My initial goal was 190. Once I hot that I may shoot for 175. Coming out of HS I was 135 and coming out of the Air Force I was 175. I've found, you just have to want to do it and set your mind to it and it can happen. I don't get any real exercise to speak off. I go up and down the stairs to the basement several times a day. Iwas doing planks to tighten things up some. Had to stop when I hurt my arm rotating the tires on the car. Stupid tire shop using their impact guns to tighten lug nuts. The muscle healed up after a few weeks but the shoulder itself has not, yet. Have an MRI scheduled for January to see if I tore my rotator cuff.I don't have a desire for fancy meals. For breakfast I rotate between scrambled eggs with bacon and eggs over easy with a sausage patty. On the weekends I make an omelette. Occasionally I make a crustless quiche. Lunches are usually salami slices with cheese. Dinners consist of a salad and some meat, The meat is polish sausage, pork chop, chicken breast or some kind of simple casserole made with ground beef. I've cut out snacking lately. At my son's place for Christmas dinner, I just ate the ham. At Thanksgiving I just ate the Turkey. Eating out I eat wings, or whatever meat dish I want with green beans. No potatoes or other heavy carb stuff.
Again, it's a mindset or it doesn't happen. My wife is hooked on carbs, they are addictive. She has protein bars and shakes and just eats shrimp or salmon for dinners. She just can't stay away from carbs. She needs to lose weight but just can't make the leap. Meanwhile she is in constant pain from her neck and her back. Until she convinces herself it is worth it, it won't happen.
I have two friends at church that are type 2 diabetics. Twice a month we have group of men that meet for breakfast. I order my usual and they will order something similar but have hash browns and/or toast and think they are doing good. One of them still drinks regular soft drinks. I quit talking about what they need to do, they don't seem to care. One, has a wife that is not in a good medical state and he need to be there for her. She likes for him to come get her meatloaf on Wednesdays, I believe, and he get two dhili dogs for himself. Like I said, I've given up trying to talk to them, all I can do is pray for them.

I gave up over the holidays. I too have the carb addiction and when it kicks in it’s unstoppable. It is directly related to stress. And the holidays are stressful. Even if we don’t go anywhere there’s the whole gift giving decision making thing, phone calls, zoom calls, having to dress up for that, I know it seems stupid but that’s how it affects me. Before that it was the buildup to the election and fear of a repeat of 2020 and after the election it was celebratory eating.
Now my clothes are feeling tight and I HATE it. I have to do like you say, the “mindset” and once the holidays are gone I’m determined to stick to it. I’m going to try low calories and modest carb instead of higher calorie and no carb, plus NO SNACKS or at least no carb snacks. A small piece of cheese or meat can tide me over but sweets make me crave more of them.

I told my wife that tomorrow it gets all thrown out. The dozens of christmas cookies we still have, leftover apple pie, etc. Gone. We have a cruise for our anniversary in 5 weeks and I'm nowhere near the 10 pounds I wanted to lose before we go.

Throwing it all out makes it real and a statement, so that's good. But would a food bank or shelter take your leftovers as a donation? Maybe not if not wrapped like from a store, but it's worth a shot.

I've found that all the "change what you eat" diets don't work for me. I guess I'm just too lazy to do the research and buying analysis and such. But what does work is doing what I do now, just less of it. A firm commitment to "eat healthy" and cut out the snacks and junk. Just a little less overall, over time and it works. Don't stress over the occasional Culvers Butter Burger. Just do it and carry on. This all worked in the past then stress got me. Stress eating is a killer. Now things are settled down and the "just a little less" shoud work again. I felt great 25 pounds lighter. Over a year that's just 1/2 pound a week. And surprisingly little food being cut out does it. That's #1 on my "what I want to accomplish next year" list.

I looked at the calories in the heavy cream I put in my coffee. 50 per tablespoon. I put at least 2 tablespoons per mug and drink 3 mugs a day. That’s 300 calories right there! I can’t give up cream but I could maybe cut it in half. Little changes like that will add up. I just have to be “mindful” about it all the time.
At restaurants I feel I must clean the plate or I’m wasting food or insulting the staff. But I should just stop when I’m full and not force myself to finish it. Who cares what they think!

And, one cup of coffee would help also. I have one from the Keurig and water the rest of the day.

The doctor asked me to lose 25-30 pounds this year and I weighed in with a total loss of 37.
At my age that seems impossible. To make sure I checked to make sure the scale was properly calibrated. if anything, it was about 1/2 pound high.
Go figure.

I've gained 4 lbs since Thanksgiving. Damn immigrants are to blame!
;)
Anyway, when I worked in California as a programmer from 1993 to 2005 I worked with a lot of H1B Visa holders. They weren't taking anyone's jobs back then - there was a perpetual shortage of competent people. And they were making as much as US citizens. (Quick story: I was a team lead at a startup called Sylantro Systems and knew the salaries of everyone on my team for purposes of annual evaluations. As one of the first ten employees I was given stock grants as an enticement to insure the company succeeded, so I accepted a good but not great salary. When I was later made manager of the team of programmers my boss showed me the salaries and it showed all of them making more than I! He said that was inappropriate so they bumped my salary up to more than my team members. Two of the three were H1B holders from India. All three were junior in experience and age.)
While some of the H1B workers that I knew looked for ways to stay in the US, most went home to their native countries, a little richer in money, experience, and I think taking some American culture with them.
I see news reports that claim Trump is siding with Musk on the issue, which is good.

Ugh. Coffee is my other addiction.

I'm still 6', 150 lbs. One day a week I go off the Reservation a bit, but nothing extreme. Yes, I've had a few Christmas cookies, bannana bread, and chocolate people have brought in at work, but I don't go overboard.
It's the Holidays, it's what we do.

pretty straightforward.

-
burn more calories than you eat - lose weight
burn fewer calories than you eat - gain weight.
pretty straightforward.
the trick is doing it.
It's not really that straight forward. One (just one) of the problems is that you can't control how many calories your body burns. You can influence it by exercising but metabolism is a complicated issue.
One (just one) of the other issues is mental. Skinny people think it is easy to quit eating, but for some people it is much harder. I'd say it is easier to quit smoking than to quit eating.
The list of issues that makes it less than "straight forward" goes on an on.
It's not impossible. I lost 30 #s over 7 months but I've been at my current weight for almost a year and can't seem to lose more. I've been at this weight for almost a year now and it takes almost all of my willpower every damn hour of every damn day just to stay here.
-

Well yeah but that’s a pretty complicated trick. Relying solely on willpower ultimately fails for most people due to the overwhelming power of the instinct to eat when you’re hungry. Killing that sensation with appetite suppressing drugs works only in the short run. When you stop the drug you’re still faced with the same problem in keeping the weight off.
The idea with low carb diets is that it evens out the blood sugar/insulin spikes. With the high sugar bump of simple carbs, then crash, the hunger sensation soon returns with a vengeance and you overeat. Fat and protein translate more slowly into blood sugar allowing the feeling of satiation to last longer. But this backfires if you eat large portions due to caloric density.
Low fat vegetarian/vegan diets emphasize fibrous plants which cause you to fart constantly and be deficient in B12.
And then finally, how do you calculate calories? It’s a simple formula (calories in minus calories out equals weight gain) but people burn different numbers of calories for the same activity (and it changes as you age), and the number of calories you actually absorb from food varies by several factors.
I guess what you have to do is keep reducing the amount of food you eat until you begin to lose weight, don’t bother trying to do the math, but that still leaves you with the willpower issue if you find yourself fighting hunger.

I was writing my response while you were posting this, lol!
The basic problem is that we evolved over a very long time to be driven to satisfy hunger at all costs, because food was always scarce and it was a matter of survival. We have had modern industrialized food production that gives us a huge oversupply for less than two centuries and that’s not nearly enough time to evolve out of the instinct to overconsume when we have the chance. In fact, it’s not possible to evolve our way out of it because being fat doesn’t kill us fast enough to not have reproduced first.
The “willpower” problem is actually us having to fight against every fiber of our being screaming at us to consume food. Modern civilization is a wonderful thing, having solved the problem of living on the edge of starvation, but it came with a downside.

It's a LIFESTYLE change, not "dieting". I purposely changed my daily routine about four years ago. I stopped eating bread, pasta, rice, potatoes and other carbs. I exist mainly on vegetables, lean proteins, including egg substitutes (basically colored egg whites), chicken breast, some fish and lean ground turkey. I get carbs from fruits and occasionally sweet potatoes.
I do drink a lo cal protein supplement if I feel it's necessary. At the same time I started a daily 21/2 - 3 hour intense workout including cardio and weights. The gym is only closed Christmas day and I was not happy. I just felt out of sorts.
Do the above and you will have trouble keeping weight ON like I do. If I'm not careful, I will start losing a few pounds a week.

My wife is taking it all to her mom's today. She lives in a 55+ community and she will share them with friends. Not sure a food bank will take week old homemade cookies.

The chemical addiction to nicotine makes quiting smoking harder than changing diet or increasing activity.
in any case, I'll stand by the fact that ingesting fewer calories than you burn will cause weight loss.
oh, I never EVER said it would be easy.

It is. If you can get past the first few weeks after cutting out the bad stuff, the cravings and constant hunger abate. You can adjust to a better “way of eating” (don’t call it a diet; that word has gained connotations of unpleasantness.)
You have to find ways of dealing with the sudden impulse to snack or dealing with hunger before the next mealtime. My husband just left for the grocery store. I asked him to buy a bunch of celery. I happen to love celery, but if it is a choice between celery or cookies, I’ll eat the cookies. So I can’t have cookies in the house. Chewing on a stalk of celery might get me through an hour or two. Then maybe a full glass of water, and distract myself with work.

I disagree. With smoking you can go cold turkey and in a few weeks or months and eventually the constant craving goes away.
Try that with eating.

No, I understand. My response and I dare say probably Joe’s also, weren’t disagreement so much as detailing what it actually boils down to. We know you know that. (If I may speak for Little Joe.)
You may. You are do a better job of it than I do. Carry on.

take the leftovers home
I do sometimes do that but I tend not to eat leftovers and end up throwing them away. Unless it’s pizza. Reheat pizza at 375 for 10 minutes it’s almost as good as original.

And what did I eat for breakfast? Bacon. But it was bacon that I cured and smoked myself. It was my first time and no way am I letting it go to waste.

Burgess Meredith was a great actor, and the best Peguin ever.

Burgess Meredith was a great actor, and the best Peguin ever.
He died a couple years after his appearance in Grumpier Old Men, making it his last movie role.
I saw the movie Grumpy Old Men when it came out but never saw the sequel until a week ago. The bacon story came immediately to mind when I saw jb1842's post.
