Trump is ending the penny.
-
Everybody hates pennies. They’re not worth anything anymore, nothing costs just a penny, and they clutter up your change purse. Having said that, I’m not sure I want to see them go, but it’s like “Gulf of Mexico”: I don’t have to be on board with everything Trump’s doing but I’m fine with 90% of it.
-
I hate all change. Why make it? Just make stuff for collectors. Sell at a profit.
-
Long overdue to eliminate the penny. Hell the nickel and dime too IMO.I think it costs 3 cents to make a penny, that’s crazy.
-
worthless gesture - far more use of cards today than before. Not as many people use cash.

Speaking of cards: Is it my imagination or has something changed. More and more places are now saying 3% discount for cash.
-
Tons of restaurants charge a fee for paying with a card.
-
I used to leave piles of change in the car and around the house, to the constant annoyance of my wife. Now I can't remember the last time I used actual money for something. I'll eat the 3% to keep from having to reload my wallet with cash or deal with change. The only time I take real money is when I'm going to a craft fair or doing business with small businesses. Then it's a little extra to the proprietor for no card fees.

It’s not your imagination.

Call me a skeptic, but it may be easier for them to hide cash transactions from the IRS so they encourage those vs. cards.
-
In any case, I never put tips on a card. Even if I pay with a card. Always cash for tips. I usually get smiles from wait staff.
-
It used to be illegal to charge extra for using a credit card...
(so some companies offered a discount for cash...)
(at least in taxachusetts)

Servers are taxed at an expected tip rate so paying the tip with cash doesn't save them on taxes.

My wife and I each get an allowance twice a month. It is in cash and is part of our budget, Everything else goes on a card. We use a Costco VISA which gives us a voucher in February based on our purchase the previous year. This years voucher is just shy of $750.

No, but it does put cash in their pocket immediately so they can get a beer on the way home.

Years my daughter was a waitress while attending college. She told me they prefer cash so I strive to tip in cash. If they report it or not its not my concern. 🫣😉

I was a waitress in college and yes, we prefer cash. At least we did back in the 1970s. Lol. I'm sure I reported all my tips to the IRS accurately to the penny.

but if the cash tip is larger than expected (by the IRS) and if they violate the law by not reporting...

Uh huh sure you did 😉😉😎

A waitress told me they like cash because they don't have to share all of it with the rest of the staff.
I'm not sure if that is an inducement or not to tip in cash. I guess it depends on how good she looks.

Some restaurants do this which is basically communism. My intention is to reward the specific waitperson, NOT to have the tip divided up between the whole staff.
You tip a waitress or waiter according to the level of service they give you, at least that’s how most people think of it. I tip a basic minimum even if the service is bad (we can all have off days and sometimes it’s not their fault) but more and more as the service gets better.
As for the argument that more than just the waitperson goes into your service being good, that doesn’t fly. Those who aren’t on the tip system (cooks and busboys) get paid the market wage whereas the wait staff get paid less because presumed tips are factored in. At least that’s how it was back in my day.

Same here. I started my working life as a dishwasher in a seafood restaurant. The waitstaff kept the tips that were left on their tables. The busboys and cooks and dishwashers were paid whatever the going rate was. I did get to make my own sundae from anything in the freezer / fridge after all the work was done and the restaurant closed. That was a nice benefit.

Yes! I worked at Pizza Hut and after closing we could all make ourselves pizza and salad and put as much topping on as we wanted, whereas the pizza we made for customers had measured amounts of topping.
Those pizzas eaten at 11:00 PM after working your butt off while smelling pizza all day long were the best.
-
I worked at Burger King. The boss allowed a free meal of ONE sandwich, ONE drink, and ONE fries. So, I invented the double Whopper, several years before it became a thing.
-
Worked at a nice restaurant bussing tables. The waitresses pooled 10% of their tips and we split it between the bussers.
-
When I eat out, I make sure it's a business expense, so everything goes on the card.

anyone remember an episode of "West Wing" where there was a brief discussion of getting of the penny? One character was wondering why a senator was vehemently opposed to the idea.
One character (Josh?) asked the other which state was the senator from... the answer was Illinois...oh.
do the math...
