The first two paragraphs tell the entire story. There is some chatter that the Chinese intentionally failed to appear to avoid having to surrender documents during rpetrial motions. Their secrets are apparently worth more than $25 billion.
The state of Missouri won a multi-billion dollar lawsuit against China for its role in the COVID-19 pandemic after none of the defendants showed up to court.
A Missouri federal judge ordered China and the other defendants on Friday to pay the state “an amount of $24,488,825,457.00,” with post-judgment interest “at a rate of 3.91 percent, compounded annually.” The People’s Republic of China and co-defendants, including the Wuhan Institute of Virology, “failed to appear or otherwise answer after being properly served, and [are] therefore in default,” Senior U.S. District Judge Stephen Limbaugh wrote in his order.

Before his federal role, he was a Missouri Supreme Court Judge (1992-2008), serving as Chief Justice from 2001 to 2003, and a circuit judge for Missouri’s 32nd Judicial Circuit (1987-1992). He also served as Cape Girardeau County’s prosecuting attorney (1979-1982). He assumed senior status in 2020 but remains active, based at the Rush Hudson Limbaugh Sr. U.S. Courthouse. On March 7, 2025—today, as it’s 11:17 PM EST—Judge Limbaugh Jr. entered a $24 billion default judgment against China in a lawsuit brought by Missouri AG Andrew Bailey, blaming China for COVID-19’s economic fallout.
