Title: Trump on NATO 25 years ago
Post by: Jim Logajan on March 11, 2025, 03:13:38 PM
From The America We Deserve (C) 2000, Donald Trump:

The Soviet Union is no longer a threat to our Western European allies. America has no vital interest in choosing between warring factions whose animosities go back centuries in Eastern Europe. Their conflicts are not worth American lives. Pulling back from Europe would save this country millions of dollars annually. The cost of stationing NATO troops in Europe is enormous, and these are clearly funds that can be put to better use. Our allies don’t seem to appreciate our presence anyway. We pay for the defense of France yet they vote against us at the United Nations and choose the side of the North Koreans, the Libyans, and other rogue nations. But, ultimately, I don’t think that we should abandon Europe completely. Pat Buchanan has made headlines for a book in which he says that the allies did not need to go to war against the Third Reich because Hitler’s ambitions were modest; he would have been happy simply to conquer Eastern Europe, so the German people would have elbowroom, and would have left the rest of the world alone. Buchanan’s position seems to come from that weird cloudcuckooland where left and right meet each other. His recommendation of appeasement toward the Nazi regime sounds exactly like what liberals said about Hitler in the ’30s and what liberals today are saying about rogue states like North Korea. If you applied the same doctrine of appeasement to domestic criminals, you’d be giving murderers and armed robbers stern reprimands and setting them free.

Trump now seems more aligned with Buchanan's reasoning than with his old self.

I’m not following you.

Get troops out of Europe. Too expensive. But if we get another Hitler or North Korea acts up we should get involved?

First, Trump has obviously not been a fan of American involvement in NATO since at least the fall of the Soviet Union. Might have never been a fan of foreign entanglements - I haven't researched that. But my take on what he wrote 25 years ago is that had Russia attempted to invade Ukraine under his watch he would have aided Ukraine a lot more than Biden did. Remember Trump did supply Javelins to Ukraine that Obama/Biden refused to send.

Anyway, according to Amazon I bought the Kindle edition of Trump's 2000 book on November 11, 2016. I was curious to know more about the new president and how his views changed, if any, in the ensuing 16 years. Just thought I'd share that still-relevant section and tack on my 2¢ opinion.

I know reality is hard for someone looking at the world thru partisan glasses, but, if russia had invaded ukraine while he was President before, he would have, BECAUSE he hates permanent wars, done what it took to put an end to it, not taken the biden regime way of giving just enough aide to keep the fucking bloodbath going.

I applaud you researching him. But I’m glad nobody’s examining what my views were 25 years ago. For example I was all for getting entangled in the mideast. Well, exactly 23.5 years to the day.

And a lot sooner.
