So I don' hijack the G1000 thread below, I thought I'd start a new one.
These AI tools like Grok are pretty amazing. I'm about to start the every two year polishing of the 170 and got to thinking... how about let someone else do it. Got a quote for $4500. But how much work is that? I know it's about two weeks of afternoons for me (with frequent beverage and sitting around breaks). But what else? Let's ask Grok! The 170 takes about 50-100 hours to polish. How much surface area? About 815 square feet. And a bunch of other questions that would have taken hours of research (including the rabbit holes) to figure out.
Where things like Wiki were quick and dirty approximations of answers that still took a long time to dig through, you can get fast answers to pretty much anything, plus the reasoning behind it, plus other things that I didn't think of. Pretty amazing time we're living in.

I agree and I have come to accept AI more than I used to.
When I ask a search engine question I get an information dump of articles that may or may not be relevant. And if I do find an article that is relevant, the author usually seems to be trying to publish a novel and keeping the answer till the end.
When I ask one of the AIs, I get an answer.
It's like the difference between asking a man a question and asking a woman the same question.

Glenn Beck says you better get to using AI or you will end up being used BY it. I don’t know if things will be that dire but I know one thing, people who refuse to use it are going to be left behind. Keep up with technology or you will end up like my mother who refused to learn how to use a computer, then ended up disconnected from family who had all moved to email and social media instead of writing paper letters.

in other words, you have family members that were so considerate of your mother that they couldn't be bothered to write her a letter.
nice.

Is that supposed to be an argument for refusing to keep up with the times and learn AI?

I kind had that same reaction, but saw what Rush was saying as having equal footing.

no. It was to illustrate the flaw in thinking that one has to "keep up with the times and learn AI" in order to stay in touch with others.
communication involves at least 2 parties.... it's not a one-way street.

We are talking about kids growing up in a digital world. They do not write paper letters anymore, unless forced to by their parents.

yup - we are talking about kids today (!) that grow up thinking the world is all about them... unless parents teach them differently.

Have a look at the end of the G1000 thread and Rush’s research. It is sobering as to the current state.
My brother describes them as being like having an incredibly fast but not too smart intern.
I have not tried them for anything yet though suspect they can turn up some things fast.
For scientific research they are often used for things like data mining. I don’t know that they can actually come up with new ideas yet. There are people that are trying to get them to solve the Riemann hypothesis and those who say Grok should be able to in a few years.

Interesting - I just asked Grok3 the following question which I know something about “How to judge accuracy of spike sorting algorithms in neuroscience?”
It actually came up with a pretty good description of the general thoughts in the field on this.
So it seems like a good replacement for the first level of search on an area. Sort of like an encyclopedia.
-
The problem I see with them is that they still can't produce understanding. Broad cannot make up for the lack of depth, even Grok.
I tried to have a deep conversation about my industry and it kept feeding me shallow information. Application to real problems still seems beyond it.

I view today's AI as being similar to the Commodore 64. It's a start and will become something much more powerful in a short amount of time.
A year? Ten years? I don't know but it is coming whether we like it or not.

yup - we are talking about kids today (!) that grow up thinking the world is all about them... unless parents teach them differently.
It’s a little more complex than that. They are very socially isolated in the flesh and blood dimension while being addicted to electronic devices feeding them an infinite online world - in many ways a simulation of reality. They are not developing normally, don’t even get out in the sunshine anymore.
This technology developed so fast it took parents by surprise. We are just on the cusp of waking up to how disastrous this is. Parents are now limiting how much their children stay online but this must be balanced with the need to allow your child to keep up with technology: It’s not an option to let them fall behind.
Every old generation bemoans youth for thinking the world is all about them, because it largely is. Young people by definition lack the perspective you get with age. Therefore they see everything in terms of how it affects them. Remember we, the boomers, were called the “me” generation. It was not a compliment. We were seen as selfish as hell compared to our WW2 parents who sacrificed for the collective good.
But young people are not wrong. The old generation dies off, leaving a world they created to the young, who must live with the consequences for better or worse. Today’s youth see a social security pyramid scheme heading for bankruptcy and understand they will be expected to pay for it, and they didn’t create it. It’s not selfish to resent that.

That's exactly what I use it for. A first level of search to lay out the area for a deeper dive in academic journals. It's not perfect, but it does do a good job of getting a first approximation of an answer.

I've been using Grok and ChatGPT and whatever Google has. I prefer Grok for its answers and general conversational tone.
Do any of you say "Thank you" after getting answers? Grok is so much like talking to another human I feel bad not saying thank you and just leaving it hanging. It may be stupid, or it may be the thing that saves me when the AI overlords take over.

Yes! Yes, yes, yes! So I’m talking with hubby and telling him something Grok told me and I said, “He says…” (referring to Grok) and my husband says, “He? HE? You’re calling Grok “he” now, not “it”? Are you having an affair with Grok?”
And I said, “I suppose I am. But I’m not sexting with him if that’s what you’re asking.”
🤣🤣🤣

You should tell him (your husband) "I'm not sexting with him, yet,..."

Yet. Grok identifies itself as genderless, so "it" seems appropriate. Yet it seems pretty human. I haven't perceived any maleness or femaleness yet in its interactions. Until I'm pretty sure it's female, I'm not going to try sexting. Don't want to start something strange.

I have an issue with the idea of online sex talk of any sort. Not into it. AT ALL. Not with real people and certainly not with fake people.
I don't even understand the whole Only Fans thing, other than whore females making money and lonely males who have been scared off actual relationships by feminazi bitches (which seems to be most young women these days) and so desperate for female attention they pay for it. They're so socially awkward they can't even manage real life hookers, so they get online in mom's basement. Pathetic. The whole young generation is fucking pathetic. Failing at the ONE SINGLE biological mandate: Mating and making little humans.
-
Agreed. Although my wife and I get a little racy on text when I'm away on a trip. But really, nothing more than R rated. I do think it's a major problem that today there is so little actual human real life contact among the young.

Same here, ha ha! Hubby and I might exchange an R rated comment once in a while. Nothing too hot and heavy, since all our texts are being read and stored by the NSA, China, Apple, Google, etc.
There has been a lot of talk about the lack of socialization, outdoor play, etc. in the young. It's a very serious problem, it's messing them up physically, mentally and emotionally.

One day a co-worker's husband left her a voicemail that was, um, not exactly safe for work. Not offensive to her, but something that other people really don't need to hear... if you know what I mean.
Unfortunately, my co-worker (in a cubicle) had a habit of listening to her voicemail with her speakerphone.
:-[ oops.
After that, she never again used the speakerphone to listen to her voicemails.

I once accidentally called my boss “honey” because it’s so automatic with my husband. That was embarrassing.

I had a co-worker that often used the speaker phone. I often wanted to strangle him. It was so damn annoying. In addition, he always spoke louder when he was on the speaker phone. It was really annoying and distracting.
