Another acro guy that some viewed as a super pilot ends up in a burning heap. On other forums they just can't believe such a super pilot can end up like this.
The old saying "you are only as good as your last flight" comes to mind. Snodgrass was another one that the wailing was going on over, and when it was suggested he tried to take off with a control lock inserted the faithful lashed out "No way!". Yet that's what did him in.
Norm McDonald once did a comedy bit about how people just couldn't believe a guy that does TV shows jumping into water with crocodiles and other dangerous animals could somehow die doing this. Same applies here.
Risk vs Reward.

Guessing if you lose a wing it would be hard to not end up in a burning heap.

I don't know the cause, lots of speculation.
It was an experimental aircraft and exposed to constant high G loads. Component failure? Dunno.
I put this here because the other forums no one can utter anything about pilot error or they will be pummeled for daring to point out the obvious. These performers are a deity among the pilot ranks and blasphemy will not be tolerated.

The wing detaching was rumor likely mixed up with another accident with that experimental where that was the cause. But Holland was just approaching to land as far as I’ve heard yet, not overloading the structure. But how do you screw up a landing that badly? Not even I can do that.

Read on POA from an acro guy that a medical episode may have been the cause.

Now that makes sense! He was simply doing a straight in landing approach, nothing fancy.

This acro guys make mistakes. Sometimes it kills them.
