Title: New Pope
Post by: Username on May 08, 2025, 10:27:57 AM
Got a Pope from the good ol' USA.  Don't know anything about him other than he's from Chicago and spent a lot of time in Peru.

This is a bit of a stretch, but the media Seems to have been ordered to hate Catholics, Protestants and Jews, so…

He graduated from my Alma Mater. I hope he's not a Woke, far Leftist Commie like the previous one.

The pope is basically an authoritarian, meaning, left on fiscal issues and right on social issues. The reverse of libertarian or classical liberalism.

He is against gay marriage, and against abortion so presumably for laws banning these things. He is also for gun control, and open borders. We need to take care of every poor person on the planet I guess, and have no right to defend ourselves.

Matt Walsh has a good take on this: He says he hopes the pope stays in his lane and just stays out of politics. In other words, focus on moral issues involving the Church and just shut up about Trump’s policies. Matt Walsh is of course happy about his conservatism on social issues but not happy about the leftism on political matters, but hopes he will at least be better than Francis.

A degree in mathematics from Villanova.  That's an interesting choice.  I wonder what that means about his logical reasoning ability?  Or that he's very good at following the rules that are laid out for him?  Extrapolating new rules based firmly in the old rules?

He’s an Augustinian, whatever that is. (An order within Catholicism).  I asked Grok:

“The Order of St. Augustine, rooted in the teachings of St. Augustine, aims to live a communal life of prayer, service, and evangelization, fostering spiritual growth and charity within the Catholic Church. Their mission emphasizes seeking God through community, contemplation, and active ministry.”

Probably “charity” means redistribution of wealth aka forcible taxation.

He tweeted (yes, this Pope tweets) a criticism of JD Vance’s statement about your family comes first, then community, then country, all before the rest of the world.  Leo said, “That’s not what Jesus taught, he didn’t say you should rank people deserving of your care into a hierarchy. Everybody should be equal.”
Or something to that effect. Meaning, we should just let illegals flood into our country and be parasites on us taxpayers.

I suspect that isn't what he means.

I'm not catholic but I'll wait to see what he says and does.

I’m sure he means in addition to voluntary donations. But you’re right, we should wait and see. I’m just wondering, has anyone ever come from Chicago that wasn’t corrupt?

Didn't this guy also try to cover up and ignore child abuse by fellow clergy? Great choice.

The Vatican is in an economic meltdown and massive debt.

I believe the reason for picking an American pope has more to do with that than religion.   I think their hopes are getting a better foothold in US politics and hoping for aid to stem off the massive debt.

I understand that Augustinians are not quite as fanatical as Jesuits but in their same general direction.

In that case they must be very opposed to DOGE. And Trump.

Long game.   Before Trump v2.0 it was relatively easy to raid the treasury.  There are hopes of that coming back.

Second, the hope of appealing to the present administration as well as the American people.

When you are flat ass broke anything is better than nothing.    And it's not about religion.
