This is HORRIBLE. You have to put a goddamn ap on your phone? Download something then upload something then they use facial recognition? This is so dystopian. I thought Real ID just meant you had a gold star on your drivers license.
And why is it tied to your passport? Does that mean you can’t get a Real ID if you don’t have a passport? What a fucking mess. I never want to fly again. Unless we buy another airplane and fly ourselves. But can’t private GA planes conduct terror attacks? Are they going to start requiring the whole real id facial recognition bullshit at FBOs on the GA side? This is not about security AT ALL. The feds are no better than red China. And it was Bush that signed this? I’m going back in a time machine and reversing my vote for him.

here in the socialist republic of taxachusetts, there isn't a requirement for any app on the phone, it doesn't get tied to a passport.
of course, I haven't bothered to get a real id yet. I might get one soon... maybe.

Apparently I have one since my DL has a gold star. I didn't ask for it. Texas just automatically gives it to you when you renew, I guess.

I've only got a few years left. I'll just renew it and get a passport card with it for my travel ID.

Got my DL in Illinois, showed my passport, and got the gold star. Then moved to Wisconsin. The Illinois DL with the gold star was good enough to get a gold star in Wisconsin.
BUT it's not good enough to get the TSA fast pass. Only some states have that advanced gold star. You need a passport that expired less than two years ago. Last time I flew commercial it would been worth its weight in gold to avoid the TSA lines and go through the quick lines. AND the TSA person said that after renewing my passport I have to wait for six months before using it. Too many fake passports and it takes that long to invalidate the bad ones.

For what it's worth, last year, I got scanned at the gate in Seattle and scanned when I went through passport control in Dubai, and the same in reverse on the way home.

Que a liberal to come in and say that if you haven't done anything wrong, you have nothing to worry about. Well, that depends on who's in charge. Tell that to the Afrikaners whose only crime was being born white. Don't forget what they tried to do to us during Covid. I can totally see our right to travel being restricted in the future.

There is a faction of the far left here in the U.S. that is going to the same place. Even beyond the demand for “reparations” from white people who never owned slaves to blacks who never were slaves, and never mind the calculation involved in descendants of blacks who owned slaves and whites with a slave in their ancestry, there are calls for the destruction of all Western civilization because of “evil white colonizers”.
This from people living in the United States with more freedoms and modern comforts than anywhere else in the world and better off than 99.9999% of humans who ever walked this planet.

Thinking about it, I guess I got the real ID when I moved to Texas in 2016. Looking at the Texas website, when you move here, you are supposed to bring documents proving your citizenship or lawful presence. I guess I brought my birth and marriage certificates (marriage for the name change), social security card, proof of residence like a mortgage statement, and proof of insurance on a vehicle registered in Texas. I’m not even sure it’s possible to get a drivers license here that is not real ID. That's the real ID checklist on the website.
I mean, what other information do they get? Do they do some kind of deep dive background investigation and data collection? It seems like all I’m doing is proving I’m a citizen, and who I am and where I live and that my car is insured and also registered here.

Nevermind. I thought about the videos again which I had already watched but only just now put together in my head: This issue is that the law opened the door to facial recognition and biometric data collection which Texas doesn’t necessarily collect other than taking your picture, which is then shared with TSA for facial recognition. It’s the feds utilizing that shit to put our very faces into a NATIONAL database.

How long before they require a DNA sample from every single one of us? That's exactly where we're headed: the technology is there now and law enforcement has already been squawking about access to 23andMe, Ancestry, etc. when their own crininal databases don't have the DNA they're looking for. All that is stopping that is the 4th Amendment, our Constitution which the left HATES openly and wants to destroy, and plenty of Republicans will go along with it, after all it was Dubya that signed the Patriot Act.

I'm pretty sure I've seen a couple of dystopian movies that incorporated this into the plot. It was supposed to be fiction.
