Who am I to judge those 3000+ hour pilots but I will never understand this mindset.

Amazing. 250 feet over water, trying to stay below a cloud base and not realizing that the base was gradually descending. I guess a radar altimeter was not an option on something that lands on water. Otherwise they might have been alerted that they were too low. Yes, the pilots followed every rule except the one that says "don't do something stupid."
