saw an op-ed piece in today's Boston Herald.
a guy bemoaning the adverse economic impact on "black" businesses caused by desegration and the ability of blacks to shop anywhere, dine anywhere, etc.
Garverism isn't necessarily all good.

An uncomfortable truth. Welfare was not the only thing that destroyed black communities. Desegregation played a part. The smarter, wealthier, and professional blacks were able to move out, but they were the stabilizing influence keeping the community’s moral standard in line. The “alpha males” if you will, who provided the role models and guidance to the young men. Remove them, then introduce welfare to take any father out of the home, and you get what we have.
That’s not to say we shouldn’t have desegregated, but in the words of Thomas Sowell himself, “There are no solutions, only tradeoffs.”

When you force integration, you also force negative change in the target neighborhoods.
Take the economically aggressive out of the community and what is left?

You can’t really have multiculturalism in a society and have it be stable. You can have regional variation, differences between races, religions, socio-economic level, etc., but you must have a strong general agreement on the basics. The variation must be incidental, adding flavor, not trying to change the underlying structure. For example, everyone must agree we are a country! With a flag that is to be respected. And borders to be protected. People must accept one legal system. Never mind a couple of grandfathered exceptions like the so-called “Native American” reservations, or the Amish. The Native Americans and the Amish are not winning local and national elections in an organized effort to overturn our legal system to replace with Sharia law.
As for forcing integration between blacks and whites, the truth is blacks were making good socio-economic progress after being freed until things like Jim Crow laws which were a reaction to Reconstruction (the terrible way the South was treated by the North after the war.) And then the welfare state threw a bomb into their nuclear family structure. When not being f’cked over by the Democrats, blacks were recovering from the legacy of slavery just fine. (The Republicans don’t get a complete pass, like the crack cocaine “conspiracy theory”. But let’s just call that the deep state which of course includes both parties.)
The desegregation that damaged communities never would have happened if they hadn’t been segregated in the first place. And it was only one factor anyway. The movement of jobs was another, like passenger rail going away and other changes that took jobs away from the inner cities.
Another HUGE factor to get back to the OP, shops and restaurants and other small businesses are subject to over-regulation, the biggest reason we are forced to deal with mega corporations. Mom and pop shops are going the way of the dinosaur. Black and white owned small businesses face burdensome obstacles, especially in cities where you have local codes in addition to federal and state restrictions and of course black communities are concentrated in the big cities so it disproportionately affects them.

I’ve never appreciated the supposed difference that makes Italian neighborhoods (Little Italy), Chinatown, German neighborhoods, and Polish neighborhoods “good” while black neighborhoods were supposedly “bad.”
Cultures tended to group together as they emigrated to America, because they grouped together back home. Many still would if left alone.

Black culture in America is unique. It’s nothing like say, Nigerian or Somalian culture. You meet recent immigrants from those places, you can see the difference. Black American culture results from blacks having been here as long as whites, in fact, on a DNA basis, a higher percentage of blacks than whites have ancestry that was already here centuries ago, before the Revolution. This is due to the massive immigration in the 19th century from places like Ireland, Germany, the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Scandinavia and of course, the UK, diluting white DNA away from being originalists.
Black culture evolved concurrent with white culture especially in the South, where slaves were of course intimately entangled with their masters in many nuanced ways, and not all were horrifically abusive (although the politically correct lens of history would have you believe that). For example, whites trusted black nannies with their infants, which they never would have done if there were nothing but a hateful adversarial relationship there, and slave owners generally cared about the health of the slaves, if for no other reason they were a financial asset.
Culture in the South is a blend of black and white arising from the shared history. Not to say there aren’t bifurcations or that it is all a good thing, and certainly not to say the history of slavery was a good thing. But it is what got us to where we are today for better or worse, the food, the music, the dialect, etc.
It’s a bit different in the North, and even in large cities in the South today. Blacks moved north looking for jobs, and settled in cities, where rural areas in the northern states remained largely white. In the South, blacks and whites mingled in rural areas and small towns, and in southern cities, before they too became industrialized, then post-industrialized and ruined with Democrat policies that created “slums”.
Where was I going with this? I don’t remember.

All those neighborhoods had a common goal. Economic and social success through EDUCATION and hard work.

I don't know who it was, but he got NUKED for saying that we did blacks a favor by getting them out of primitive Africa, bringing them over here, and teaching them a trade.

Thomas Sowell has said it himself, at least I read it in one of his books. But yeah I remember someone else recently saying that and getting nuked.

The flak is always heaviest the closer you get to the target.
Sowell really has a gift for enraging stupid liberal people with the truth.
