Not just the death of civilization but the very real description of growing old alone that is already happening in Japan and appears to be the future for all of us. And he says immigration is not the answer: All the immigrants coming into Europe and the U.S. are also going to age out. Maybe at a slower rate but they’ll get there too.
The hollowing out of schools and communities. The lack of face to face socialization among the kids and resulting dearth of mating among the young.
It’s hard to argue with his facts and conclusions. The bell curve relating reproduction to age at first parenthood is eye-opening. He says never mind all the excuses people give about why they delay parenthood. It no longer matters, now that we have shifted the curve to the right.
The example of fish moving downstream due to bears. The bears go away but that doesn’t mean the fish know to move back up. So all these proposed fixes, like paying people to have children, aren’t going to work. (We already see they are a dismal failure in China.)
He doesn’t mention the following but I thought of this: Generations ago it was normal to marry and begin reproducing not long after sexual maturity. I have a great-great… maybe 3 greats? - grandmother who married at 14. Nowadays that is considered “pedophilia”. Which USED to be, attraction to prepubescent children but these days probably 90% of “pedophiles” refer to being attracted to legally underaged, like 14 to 17. To call that pedophilia would have been considered insane in 1776. Even as recently as the 1960s, we accepted that some communities still considered 14 a perfectly reasonable age to marry. On the Beverly Hillbillies, Granny famously worried that Ellie May was an old maid at 20, so tried to pass her off as 14. There is no way that show would even be allowed to be aired in 2025. Yet it is aligned with biological reality.
(NO this does NOT mean I think middle aged men screwing underaged girls on Epstein Island is okay. I’m referring to two youth marrying young to start a family, as was the norm 200 years ago, and for the preceding million years of human existence.)
Aside from redefining any sexual activity prior to 18 as pedophilia, society has massively delayed parenthood by insisting ALL go to college. This delays mating until age 22 just for starters, but college implies career, and women are now programmed to need a “career” first, and motherhood a distant delayed second, if at all. So now after college women must work to justify their sunk cost. We have totally screwed our biological schedule, the schedule that kept our species thriving, and according to this guy, reversing that blunder may nigh be impossible.
