Interesting reading, how does your state compare?

I pay nothing here in Georgia. A lot of my income is SS and I believe that gets exempted on my state taxes. Actually, all my retirement income and SS gets excluded leaving me with a zero dollar income for the state.
-
No income tax in Texas. I LOVE not filing a return. Our property taxes are a bit higher but we pay less total than we did in NC with property plus income. I think sales tax was a wash, depends where you live.
-
Florida, zero income tax. After living here 5 years, that's more than made up in higher electric and insurance costs (and I'm central/no coastal-flood zone). Real estate and sales tax is a wash vs Pennsylvania, where I lived prior.

Pennsylvania has inheritance tax, Boooooo! Hit us when Mark’s mom died last year.

My property tax is going down significantly due to our new senior homestead exemption increases. Will not be paying school tax now.

That reminds me, they fixed ours too at 65, so county tax will never increase (city does but we aren’t in city limits and some other miscellaneous does but it’s minor).
When I did the comparison that was a few years ago. Meanwhile, back in NC, the house I still own with my siblings, the property taxes are skyrocketing. Now it’s probably even way more savings here in Texas.

No income tax
Low property tax
9.25% sales tax on everything I buy, but that is good. Don't want to pay a lot of tax? Save money and don't be a big spender.

PA sucks. We have ALL the taxes and the second highest gasoline tax in the country
-
Alabama has income tax but my SS and Air Force pension exempted. Property taxes are low, sales tax in the area is 10%, and gas taxes I guess lower if not average.

I achieved Vpa* in 1987 and never looked back.
* Vpa - Pennsylania escape velocity.

I sorta don’t have a problem with gas taxes because it’s a way of making the people who use the roads pay for the roads, but there are issues:
Bicyclists. They want “bike lanes” but pay no gas tax.
EVs. Self explanatory.
State budget. It’s an income stream but money is fungible. Cut overall spending so your gas tax can be lower, and lower all taxes for that matter.

The problem with gas taxes is they aren't usually spent on roads, it's just an input to the general fund. If it was actually held in an account that only could be used for roads and was adjusted yearly so not to have huge surpluses or huge deficits then I would agree with it.

So PA is the highest in the country. We also have the worst roads in the country which the gas tax is supposed to fix. Not holding my breath.

Yep, fungible. Weren’t they supposed to do that with our social security?

In a prosperous civilization you can afford the intensive maintenance to keep them up. Our civilization is declining, the signs are everywhere. A decaying infrastructure is ominous. It is literally the foundation of our survival: Trains and trucks, without which your grocery shelves are empty.

Here, yellow cone season is just about over. Time for ice season.

Gotta be connected if you want a piece of that pie.
