Title: Article on political violence

I thought this was interesting, especially the idea that for most people political opinions are just a form of signaling tribal identity, not a serious consideration of policy.

Agreed.  Most people don't know what they're voting on.  They just go with whatever group they associate with.  We should do away with the "Vote all D (or R)" options on ballots.  People should at least make a little effort.

You need to get out more. (Out of 'chusetts")

I've seen that on ballots since I was 18, in five different states.

Right now I am seeing lots of posts by blacks saying they always voted Democrat just because that’s what you do. Their parents and grandparents did, everyone in the community did. But lately they’ve noticed that the far left of the Democratic Party does not represent them, and in fact, they’ve always had “conservative” values (church, family) and now feel more aligned with Republicans, or MAGA, or at least are rejecting the Democrats because of the LGBTQ+ stuff and letting in tons of illegals.

Maybe that is touching on some policy, like men in girls locker rooms or not defending the border, but the feeling from these videos is more like the article says, tribal identity. They no longer feel comfortable identifying with the Democrats who have become rainbow gender-bending lunatics.

Because what I NEVER see in any of these videos whether the person is black or white, male or female, is a discussion of basic free market economics, how the U.S. is now a hybrid of socialism and corrupt corporatism, or the massive takeover by the federal apparatus of a huge portion of the entire economy, the ratio of public sector vs private sector employees, the fact that our healthcare system is already hopelessly entangled with government entitlements, infested with meddlesome regulations and so on: All the important foundational issues upon which our survival and quality of life rests. The really important stuff, people just seem blind to it, or uneducated about it?

The old school divide between Democrats and Republicans was Democrats were for social safety nets for the common man (socialism lite) and Republicans for private market corporations, giving lip service to private companies uplifting everyone but in reality both parties more or less just enriched themselves while growing, and growing, and growing, the federal governments size and power.

Now the Dems have veered into outright communism and the Reps are divided into establishment business as before and MAGA populism which doesn’t talk much about “free market” but is more like the socialism lite of the old Democrats.

And I don’t see people talking about this other than some intellectuals. The rank and file on social media are oblivious and focus on the visible cultural issues which do seem to be tools of tribal signaling. So yes, this article may be on to something.
